Irene

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Let's all start blowing, really hard, toward the east. We need to keep this gal off shore.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Sorry. Ardesia, Blow west. We desperately need the rain!

Sumter, SC

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, ardesia. Heard this morning that the latest computer models are indicating it may veer a little north and strike MB. Hope by Wednesday we have a better idea of where it's going to strike, so folks can evacuate.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Well then lets blow west so it goes into the gulf then turns back east over georgia.

I was just out this morning making mental notes about what I need to do if Irene heads this way. If it still looks like it's headed this way by Wednesday then I'll probably be renting a small U-Haul Truck and stick everything in it like lawn furniture and plants that won't fit in the greenhouse. I'm using mobile home augers holding down the greenhouse and shed.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

The weather liars have really changed the direction since earlier this morning and I am tentatively breathing a little easier. Dill, here's hoping you get some much needed rain. We have had plenty lately but the soil is still so dry from the many weeks without any, we could use some more rain also.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Things are looking a bit better for us and really bad for OBX in NC. Hopefully on the next update they will move the projected path a bit more to the east.

Kure Beach, NC(Zone 9a)

It looks like it will hit us in Wilmington NC, if not directly, than very close.
I love a good storm so have no prob with it coming here. If it's a cat 1 or 2, we won't leave but may if it get stronger than that.
Here's my volunteer babtista practicing for the storm. ;)

LOL, it is always good to train the kids to prepare for an emergency.

We are relaxing here now but I always have Hugo in the back of my mind, he sure changed direction when no one expected him to. This morning I did a rough count of containers around the garden and gave up when I got to 100. Something (me maybe) has got to change.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. I've been doing the same thing Alice - counting heads .. trying to decide who goes in the greenhouse and who has to fend for itself. I'm toying with the idea of renting a small U-Haul truck and putting stuff like lawn furniture, plants and lawn mower in it if Irene starts heading west again.

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

Unless things change, looks like it will be very close for Lavina and me. Starting to get the house, yard and boat ready.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Entlie, I hope and pray Irene continues to veer offshore.

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

Wednesday am - The track looks much better this morning. We are still continuing to prepare, however because we will probably get some part of it.

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

Ooh. This doesn't look good. We are smack in the middle of a hurricane WARNING!
The boat is almost ready, and the house about 75%. That still gives us Friday to finish up.

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

Looks like the current track (subject to change without notice) would put me with a lot of rain and 30-40mph winds. All of my garden is in containers so the cats will have a blast checking them out in the house. Not sure with the thing of the stores running out of bread, milk, and eggs every time there is a storm warning. Everyone must make french toast when the power goes out or something (grin).

Stay Safe Neighbors,

Indeed .. stay safe .. thinking good thoughts for all my friends to the north

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Stay safe indeed, most "things" can be replaced, just take care of yourselves.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

Keep safe, our coastal friends! Will be thinking of you all!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Entlie, Lavina, Barb, we are thinking about you, be sure to let us know how you are when things calm down again.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

We started getting heavy rain and some wind gusts here about an hour ago .. already up to 2 inches of rain in a little over an hour. I spent the morning shoring up the reed fence to the chain link fence with more zip ties. The smartest thing I ever did was drop 2 pieces of rebar down each of the poles of the chain link fence in the areas that have nothing to slow down wind gusts. Works beautifully and the reeds give way now instead of the poles of the fence bending.

Kure Beach, NC(Zone 9a)

Well, Irene showed up a few hours ago, so we decided to go out and greet her.
Here's a picture of my, with my fearless puppy Sugah, at the boat ramp on the south end of the island.
Weeee!!!!!

Hope everyone is safe and clear of damage! Crazy how this hurricane just punished the entire east coast from NC on up. Usually they bounce off the coast or break up dramatically once they make landfall.

Nice picture, Barb!
Well that storm was really something. We lost power at 4 am Saturday, and it came back on at 9 pm Tuesday. We had 13 inches of rain, and over 9 ft. of storm surge, our house is at 10 1/2 ft. The water was about a foot and a half higher than Isabelle, and 6 inches higher than Fran. Winds were worse on the "back side." Fortunately, no big trees down, just some large branches and lots of tree trash. Our generator stopped working, George bought a bigger one and spent a day and a half trying to get it (brand new) to run. After hours on the phone with store and distributor, he got a replacement which started on the first pull. The chain saw quit working and he used an electric sawzall connected to the generator to saw up stuff. The blower quit working (gas tank failed) and he replaced the gas tank with one from an old weed eater. Wow! Lots of stuff gives up in a hurricane! Today the dryer was taking forever to dry, and the vent was clogged with wet lint, probably from rain blowing straight into the vent. Sunspsot Baby is fine - she lost a bolt out of the bimini, and the vane off the wind generator, small stuff. We are very fortunate. Hope everyone else is ok, too. Entlie

Good to know you fared well. Isn't it amazing how all those things can go wrong with your tools just when you need them the most. So glad to hear you were able to get a replacement gnerator, they are usually in short supply after a storm.

Good night, Irene, indeed! Your husband sounds awesome - his quick thinking in a jam reminds me of the title character from MacGyver. I'm so envious, Entlie!

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks! Then I raked so much I broke my favorite rake, and he used an old garage broom handle to get it back in service! What a guy!

What a man, what a man, what a mighty good man. I'm gonna sing again;-)
