I need help with my hazelnut come this fall. It's currently potted, but
am going to place in ground. Where is a good spot? I have lots of chanilink
if it needs support, and sun and shady spots. What kind of soil does it prefer?
This is my biggest concern, because I have a bunch of sand and will have to amend the
soil to what you guys think is good for it. It is listed as a zone 9 cultivar, so I'm really pumped
about it getting to grow. Does it needa pollinator? I had 3, 2 died. TY gang
Hazelnut Help
You probably won't have problems with the soil, but you might with the chill hour requirements and the heat which they don't like. You can't go by just plant zones because not all zone 9s are the same. The USDA Plant Zones onlt take winter lows into account.

From Australian source:
The need for pollinizers
Pollinizers are required in Hazelnut orchards because cultivators are self-incompatible. This incompatibility is controlled by a single genetic locus. Hazelnut cultivators are diploid and thus have 2 alleles. If an allele expressed in the pollen is met with the same allele in the female flower, then the cross is incompatible. Pollinizer selection is important. Compatibility charts are available in our publication "Hazelnut Story Part III".
Whilst we recommend at least 20% of pollinizers to the main cultivar in Australia (due to the many growing regions in distance), we recommend that spacing is a more important issue. Hence it is advisable to use 15 - 20 meters as the maximum distance of any main cultivar to a pollinizer.

This source has a list of cultivar and their chill hour requirements on page 29, but I'm nit sure the link will work.

bettydee, It's from the National Arbor Day foundation, and they said it was a special development able to fruit in zone 9. Their website has been down for days though, and
I can't find out if it had to have one of the others for pollination. I am worried about the chilling hours though, even though they say it can do it. I've loked
for years for a filbert that could handle my zone, and this was it. TY for your help.
edit: I was finally able to reach it:

You are right. I'm in trouble and will need to reorder. TY!

It says here, where I ordered it, it does zone 9

One of the links I provided mentions that hazelnuts don't like heat which a problem for many zone 9 locations. In some zone 9s on the west coast, heat is not much of a problem, In those areas, the evenings cool off and many heat sensitive plants seem to be able to handle a few days of hot weather without a problem. The hazelnut is probably one of those plants what would do well in zone 9b off the coast of California, but not in a zone 9b in Texas or Florida.
Being able to provide the needed number of chill hours is probably the most important factor that will determine whether the trees will grow and bear nuts in your area. Do you know how many chill hours your area gets on average? Unfortunately, unless the hazelnut you received came with a cultivar label, you won't know how many chill hours your particular tree requires until and if it reaches maturity.
Well betty, it didn't, and you may be right that I still won't be able to grow my beloved hazelnut to fruition. They are becoming so expensive
(any kind of nut) that it seems appropriate to become self-sufficient. They must think filberts are an endangered species!
We receive 100 to 210 chill hours annually.
I'm still looking for the first flower on my 2 (one of the 3 died) Arbor Day Foundation trees I got in 2006! It is HOT here, hotter than my friend in Ft. Meyers (near Punta Gorda).
