Maybe a broad-winged? I'm sure that tail is identifiable, but my bird book doesn't describe what you'd see perched from the back.
Unfortunately, I did not see it fly away. I looked down while creeping closer, and when I looked up he was gone. I'd gotten lost trying the find the trail and ended up in what used to be the reservoir but is now caked mud with some plants and lots of snail shells. It was kind of cool, but I was relieved when I finally found the path.
CLOSED: What hawk?
Red-shouldered from the tail pattern, though the head looks paler than I'd expect.

After I posted this, I started to think Red-shouldered. I couldn't tell for sure though. Glad you can! Thanks!
