the dangers of mulching LOL

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i had several bags of pine pellets that i wanted to use up. it makes a great mulch. as i started scooping it out and tossing it underneath these small shrubs, the noise attracted the cranes who were "water bathing" and they came running. i hollered for my better half and he grabbed the camera.
we, like so many other states, have experienced abnormal heat waves throughout these summer months so it isn't uncommon for the cranes to spend the entire day plopped down in the water...especially the two young ones. they spread their wings and almost lie flat down in the water for hours on end with only head, neck and back exposed.
anyway, wanted to share this picture with all of you.

i think i started several threads with the stork that comes to visit. it has a mate now and still visits periodically.

you're very welcome. the bird life here is just amazing. we have so many different species and they really keep us entertained. the tri-colored or louisiana heron is a real clown but i never seem to get any pictures of them. will keep trying!

Wonderful photos and a memorable experience for you each time they come closer-I'm happy for you.

that is actually as close as i want to get to them! we live in a "snowbird" town and have a lot of rv resorts in the area. a friend who lives in one during the winter told me that they have now banned feeding the cranes because they will peck at your glasses, jewelry, whatever catches their eye and can poke a hole through your palm if you hand feed them. they aren't aggressive by any means, just curious, powerful birds....best enjoyed from a slight distance for their protection and humans too....but i have to admit that i was thrilled when they came up to me.
