last sat august 7th. i was cleaning and i heard birds screeching so i ran down stairs/outside and saw about 6 robin's flying and diving at the very large trumpet vine i have growing in my wall garden. robin's yearly make a nest there at lest once a year. it looked weird and we have been having critter problems/mostly voles, so i thought possibility a vole was disturbing the nest. so i grabbed a push broom and ran outside and banged on the fence. to my scared surprise a large gopher jumped out and ran with me chasing him to the other side of the of the patio. he scrambled under the fence even though i was hitting him with the broom. i went back to the vine and on the ground a fledgling robin was out of the nest. i put on gloves and got a small container and picked him up and put him back in the nest.to my surprise he jumped/flew out. i did this again 2 more times.the third time i knew i got him in good. i was watering when i saw him on the ground again. then i realized he was so scared that he was not going to stay in the nest.i got a large planter/put grass in it and put it were the parents who were watching me could see him. i waited and the parents began to feed him. i knew the container was to lg. so my husband and i got a smaller container, got the nest and put it in it.then we got a coat hanger and wire and made a new nest for the robin,we knew it was going to rain so we hung it on a bracket under the awning and waited. the parents started feeding him again.it rained all the next morning, but the parents kept feeding him.later that afternoon i checked the nest and he was gone. i went looking for him when the father robin came w/food and the fledgling was gone.i think i see him flying because he makes short jaunts branch to branch and you can tell he's a newbie flier.this made me happy that i didn't believe in old wives tales. the robins wanted me to help. the other baby bird was dead.now to get the gopher.
robins nest attacked by gopher
Kat, I'm glad you went against the 'old wives tales' about not to intervene with nature. Because of your intervention; one of the little baby fledgling has a chance to fledge. Thanks for sharing your story with others.
Lily_love,thanks for reading my forum. went on line in case i had to feed him and found out birds have almost no sense of smell and they do want help. i see him when i go out and he does this short burst of flying from tree limb to tree limb that are close together.i wonder if he sees me and knows me!
Lilly, great photo. thank's for sending. my digital camera broken, have to fix or buy new, no pic's from me sorry. katflowers
