Glory Lily 'Rothschildiana' question

Camden, SC(Zone 7b)

After unsuccessfully trying to grow this from seed, I finally purchased a tuber this spring. I threw it into a pot & it started growing like a weed! I have a 6ft green curvy wire-like thing that I was getting it to grow around. It went up to the top & I started it back down. Went away for the weekend & left it unattended for a few days. When I returned it was tangled, so I tried to straighten it, breaking the top off in the process. From that point on, it has refused to grow. :( Please advise.

Hm, that's too bad, but they are sort of brittle when they grow up that fast! I broke one of my shoots off this spring as well, and it branched, then flowered. So don't worry! But you're going to have to not worry about it getting tangled, too. It's just that kind of vine. The single shoot goes up, then it branches when it gets ready to flower and does sort of flop over. No plant is perfect.

Good growing on getting it that tall. Mine go up to about 6 to 7ft. then they start flowering. I'd advise you to give it a shot of half-strength fert, make sure it's in about 1/2 day sun, and let 'er rip. They're vigorous and they multiply, too.You should have a couple more tubers in that pot by fall.

Mine are in the ground, and in 4 years I've gone from a single tuber to at least 8 that are putting up shoots. Plus I sent a couple away on a trade to another DG member in April, too. This is my clump, been blooming off and on since May.

Btw, once your single shoot is finished blooming, it will yellow and then die back. Don't despair! The tubers are alive and well, and will come up again in the fall. Mine bloom again as late as November if it's not too cold.

Remove the dead stalk and ease off watering for a few weeks, then as soon as you see a new shoot, start up with the fert and water again. (if it gets cold at night before the new shoots start, you may have to wait 'til spring)

I've removed two spent shoots from my clump since May, and this last month had one more shoot up - that's the tallest one in the picture, behind the big brug branch.

HI dyzzypyxxy,

Thanks for your reply. It's only grown that long stem, no branching & no flowers. I have given it some diluted fertilizer, but nothing yet. I guess since it's still looking green, it's doing ok, but I'm envious of your flowers...... :)

I grow mine up inside a decorative cone cage. It keeps them upright and gives them something to climb around.

Very pretty! Since this was my first year, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I hope next year will be better.... :)
