Appropriate plant too! Hope you like! Taken yesterday.
Yellow Monarch on the right kind of bush!
Hi, tommyr! Nice photo of a Tiger Swallowtail. Do you have a butterfly guide book? I have Butterflies through Binoculars, The East. It is an excellent field guide and can help you learn a lot of the butterflies that are commonly seen in the eastern U.S.
Thanks 2gardenkate for the correction! I assumed it was a Monarch. Guess I shouldn't do that! I do not have that book. Guess I need to get it! Thanks!
Tom
Hi Tom. Here are links to two butterfly field guides-
My favorite field guide- http://www.amazon.com/Butterflies-through-Binoculars-Eastern-America/dp/0195106687/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312932625&sr=1-4
I have this one too- http://www.amazon.com/National-Audubon-Society-American-Butterflies/dp/B000KX7YPQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312932625&sr=1-3
The Butterflies through Binoculars is my favorite the other one is just ok. You should try looking at your local library first. There are lots of different books on butterflies and you might find a better one!
Aside from your own garden, the best place to look for butterflies is a meadow.
Good luck,
Kate
Get the Kaufman Focus Guide: Butterflies of North America. You can probably get the old 2003 edition real cheap on Amazon or some other book site. A newer version was published in late 2006. Not much different from the previous edition aside from the added rare butterflies of south Texas.
If you never plan to visit south Texas then get the 2006 edition. If not, save your money and get the 2003 version.
Really do recommend that guide book. Shows range, flight seasons, lets you know the larval host plant and it has very good enhanced digital images of butterflies (dorsal and ventral views) that will help you learn the identification marks.
I think I must have at least half a dozen copies myself. I keep one in my camera bag, another in the truck, another in the car, at the house, at the ranch etc. Have also given several copies of the older version to friends and relatives over the years.
