Soil over watermelon vines.

Austin, TX

One of my raised gardens is very low on soil (using Mel's mix). It is mostly empty of because of the heat here in Texas, so before I plant my fall crop I want to add a few inches to the bed. The problem is that I have Fall watermelons that are doing great (climbing up a trellis) in the bed. Does anyone know if it would hurt the melons if I covered up the bottom few inches of the vines with the mix (leaving the vines going up the trellis undisturbed)? Thank you.

I would add the soil around the vines in increments of about 1/2 inch at a time with maybe a week or two in between additions
until you reach the desired level of soil. I don't think doing that would hurt the vines.

I basically have the same problem re soil and adding more! Also, I haven't trellised my melon and it's taking over -- couldn't figure out the best way to trellis so I didn't....
