Though I live in the northeast our summers can get pretty humid and zinnias may become infected with mildew.Thought maybe some of you TX gardeners can suggested some mildew resistant varieties. I do space them for better air circulation and try to avoid overhead watering but still have some problems. I have no problem with my great favorite mildew resistant monarda "Jacob Cline". Would appreciate any help you can offer.
Mildew resistant zinnias
I wish I could help with the zinnias but I don't grow them, I do know that exposure to sunlight helps a lot with mildew problems.
Josephine.
My favorite zinnia is the " profusion series", sometimes called narrow-leaf zinnia. They bloom in mounds about a foot high and require little except a lot of sun and some water. Mine have been beautiful this summer with temps exceeding 100 for days on end. I do spend time putting water on their roots and deadheading most every day and they get some overhead water from our sprinkler system.
They have shown no signs of mildew and this is not the first year I have grown them. They also will come up voluntarily if you throw the deadheaded blooms on to the soil and leave them thru winter, at least here they do. We do have some humidity here altho the drought has knocked that back some.
If you would like some seed for the profusion zinnia I would be happy to mail some to you, probably for next year since your growing season is shorter than ours. I have the orange and also white plants. Here in the spring Lowe's usually has the plants available in several colors. Look in plant files for pictures if you are not familiar with these wonderful plants.
I have been trying to remember the name of mine and it sounds like the kind you have. I agree they are terrific. I let them go to seed last fall and I got lots of new ones. One of the few things surviving our heat.
