What a wonderful simple pleasure! I love watching baby chicks hatching out, it's so fascinating. Nature at it's very best.

They are so cute when they are little like that. Little puff balls. Sweet! Can't wait to see the pictures!
LOL Green, that's not counting.. Counting is when you predict how many will hatch! :)
Congratulations.. sounds like your hatch is doing fine.
LOL! There's something special about chicken people! We're kindred spirits!
Here is my new babies.,two splash, two blues, and seven buff orpintons. The little one sitting on the feed dish hatched last night and is not fluffy yet.Today is day 21 so I will leave them till tomowow,it does not smell to good in there, took out two eggs that cracked and were rotten, don`t want any to explode in there.
Oh, so cute! Congratulations on a great hatch!
Can I reuse the sponges in another hatch if cleaned or do you throw them away? And how do you clean the incbator? With a mild bleach solution and soap and water?
Awww Green They are just tooo Cute!! Looks like youll have plenty of eggies come spring! Wow what a good start on a stocked Hen house!
Congratulations on a great hatch! They are sooooo cute!!
I was warned about using bleach, as it breaks down styrofoam.. but I used it anyway.. Especially if there were yucky ones. I used the sponges over as long as they were not dirty.. I just rinsed really well and left it open to air out for a day or so.
If you can get a small Mag light to candle the eggs next time, you can avoid any rotten ones.. Takes a little practice, but very quickly you can see if they are developing. (with the exception of really dark or blue eggs)
I have candled before but with 40 eggs I did not want to keep the incubator open that long or keep opening it and closing it so I did not candle at all this time.I really expected a lot more to hatch, especially from my own flock, with shipped I know you are taking a big chance. The last shipped I got three out of 15 and this time four out of 12.I`m trying to think what I could have done to get a bigger hatch. The temp on this incubator held very well, the humidity was hard to keep up,no problem in lock down I just put in the sponges to bring it up.My humidity ran between 37 and 45 most times. And in lock down I had it up to 70 to 77% Any suggetions for next spring when I try this again?I thought in April I would try again. OH I HOPE THEY ARE ALL PULLETS! I know have four splash and two blue orpintons. The other three were hatched the 17th of last month,I`ll get some pictures of them.My goal is to have all blue, splasha few blacks and some white ops,and keep a few of my bigger buff hens.
That is low humidity for the duration, not the lockdown..(In my opinion) The temp must have been a little tiny bit high to hatch early..
I take the mag light, and turn the lights out and just do a "quickie" candle while they are in the bator.. Just a quick check to see if they are developing... It doesn't hurt to keep it open a few minutes when they are developing.. it's when you can't recover the heat or Rh fast is when you can have problems..
You might check the eggs that didn't hatch.. it will give you an idea of what happened.. It might be fertility.. ?
The thermomtor was on top of the eggs and it read 100.3 almost all the time.
You can sterilize sponges by running them thru a dishwasher, or microwaving after "washing" them...
Thanks Cat I knew that and just forgot it.
If you have a fan in the bator I'd drop the temp to 99.. Doesn't hurt for them to hatch a day or two early though. A constant temp is the most important.
Yes I have a fan in it
