Hi Ruby! Looking forward to some pics. Plant stand from the florist sounds super.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally---

I just copped this one at HD today. Looks a lot like yours.....
It was on "sale"--for $7.88. It is in a 10" pot and it has 3 plants in it.

I may just re-plant it in a bigger pot and let it be--as I have NO room anywhere
to plant it now. Might even dig the pot in and let it stay in that pot for next year too.

Half way decent weather today....even though it is around 90*--but last night's
T-storm blew away the humidity. It is almost bearable!

Here's a close-up of the same flower I bought....NICE!!!!

Sally--Did I tell you, or did you see anywhere else---that I have a 5gal bucket sitting in my
local 7-Eleven--and every 2 days--I go and get it--full of grinds.

Then I just open their drawer, get a new trash bag, line my bucket with it and leave with the loot.
Not sure how long I will keep this up. Now sure just what i will do with all these grinds?
I know they are good for compost--but I have been throwing all the grinds-laden filters in my
S.E.M. Should get the attention of some of the worms!
Since I cannot turn anything in this SEM over--it is a slow process......

Got 3 bags I have not gone through sitting on my work table outside. Think I will don gloves and go through it all.
Just have to find another empty 5gal. bucket.....I know I have some....WHERE?????

Sally--if you like--I will dedicate a full 5gal. bucket just for you when we go to Jill's for the Swap.
I was hoping she would have started a Thread on it already.......

Hmmmm--seems the picture for my previous Post did not get sent...Just the close-up....Here it is again.

Pretty Gita, I came home with more plants today, too. Got some beautiful big dark leaf cannas for a$. They blew over in the storm last night and had a main stem broke. One of them probably won't bloom but I think the other one will.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, thats great that the 711 is working with you that way. I would just spread those grinds around my beds as is. They dry out and become just like nice dirt. Then can put the filters only in the SEM, save a lot of space.

Dang you gals are making it hard to stay out of Lowes or HomeDepot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

There is so much grinds left clinging to the filters that I think the compost is getting plenty of it.
Can't say that the filters themselves are going away. By now, when I look into my SEM--all I see is filters...
They better decompose soon!

Is there any plants that you know of, Sally, that should not have grinds near them?
I pretty much learned the hard way that cucumbers DO NOT like any form of fertilizer. BAM! Dead in 2 days!!!
I have some new ones growing now--behind my Eggplants. Trying to be very careful not to put anything on them--or near them.

Did you see how huge my green Zucchini is getting???? I have 2 small tables holding the plant up.

I wasn't aware that the grounds would hurt anything suddenly so I am no help there.

Awesome Zucchini! Mine gave me two fruit then died with million squash bugs on it. EW!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I think mine is also succumbing to the heat....Many leaves are just yellowing out.
Perhaps--it is the end of their productive season as well. I have never grown Zucchini before.....
It has a couple good ones still coming....Don't know after that....

My Italian Eggplant is making these slim, small, white eggplants. Haven't done anything with them yet....
The "Black Beauty" one has a couple of fruit on it.

This has been a 1st year of veggie gardening for me--other than Tomatoes.

Sally and Gita found this link about coffee grounds in the garden that's enjoyable and informative. Worms love grounds! And acid loving plants especially. My Mom used them on her house plants. Some say the grind of the grounds will help repel slugs and that cats and other critters are not fond of the smell.

Could find nothing on plants to avoid but did see some cautions mentioned when spreading the directly into the garden without composting them:
a) sprinkle themlightly as they can form a cked layer if spread too thickly
b) some concern that dogs might "eat" them and we all know caffine is super bad for them..

hi guys

good luck with your veggies Gita! We have a volunteer Italian squash in the middle of some tomatoes. I just left it alone since the tomatoes were tipping over top of their cages. This time of the season our veggie garden get a bit on the wild and crazy side lol

coffee grounds reminds me of the time I lugged a big bag home from Starbucks in Phila =)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

It must be the heat! My Tomatoes have barely any green leaves left. Just a bunch of dried up and yellow leaves.
I wrote about that earlier...can't say I got any satisfactory advice....
I have collected a decent amount of tomatoes, but not too many of the bigger ones--a few Ch. Prpls.
Trying to save the seeds from those. Playing around with fermentation. Not sure I am doing it right....
Dave and Carolyn differ in their directions. .Dave said in his article to stir--Carolyn, in her book, said no.

The most prolific one is the larger-fruited of the two Sun Golds. OK! By now I know that these are NOT Sun Golds--as
they are about the size of an average apricot--maybe 1 1/2" in diam. Man! I pick hand fulls of these daily.
Now they are getting smaller, though. Getting a lot of the real Sun Golds as well.
Now I know that the Sun Gold is NOT an heirloom...That was a revelation this summer.....

My older Zucchini leaves are also yellowing. I just cut off all the yellow ones. The top part is still producing...so--so...

I swear--I do not know why I even grow anything..I have given most of it away....Even Tomatoes...
Must remember this next year.....

We have hawks that visit our yard daily and this morning 3 were out back. I've seen them close up many times. I tried to get a close up of them on video this am, but they flew away!!! I still took the video. It gives you a brief clip of our veggie garden. Here it is:

Okay, Gita..is that Irish Eyes or Prairie Sun? Wonder if they have them at the Aspen Hill HD? Might have to make a quick visit tomorrow or the one at Germantown on Wednesday when I'm there. I've think both of those varieites have the green center, am I right?

Lovely garden and video Diana, I enjoyed your tour. Holly's Ric

Crozet, VA

Greetings all - Thank you Sally for the new thread. Now I feel obligated to post some pictures. I will do so later today maybe, in a hurry this morning.

Did want to say that it is extra special to watch Diana's garden tour. I had the great privilege some years back to have a live garden tour of Wind's garden and I was in awe of the many beauties she had growing. Many of my out side plants, plus a Wandering Jew that is a house plant came from her home. That is so special to look at plants and be reminded of the other gardeners who grew them. Thank you so much for sharing the video, I felt as if I were there with you. The Canna's are looking extra special. Hope that things up your direction are going well for everyone. Really nice to see you after such a long time.

Thanks for the reminder that Jill has a swap thread started...will check it out. Take care and heal up soon Ric. Hello to all other chatters. Always love to hear from each and every one of you and hear how your gardens are growing.

This is our second year with a veggie garden Gita and last year I had loads and loads of bounty to preserve but this year things have been really slow coming in and are being eaten before there is enough to freeze. A big disappointment but hopefully the potatoes he planted will produce well. Love having potatoes available and not having to pay the grocer for them.

Anyway......here is hoping that everyone will have a great week.

Okay, taking a bit of a break between chores and decided to post a few of the pictures I took about a month ago of my houseplant collection. Add another months growth to these and you will know why I am so in love with all my plants.

Most of the plants liked their winter home well enough and I don't believe I lost any of them this year. Some of the plants began looking a bit shabby towards the end but most have come back and are loving these summer temps.

Hello mid-atlantic gardeners!

I just bought a house last year that had literally no plants, except for a couple of shrubs and weeds.

I spent a lot of money and time this spring on some basic foundation plants, but a large oak tree (50 feet tall) near my property and heavy clay soil are killing me (and the plants). I have killed probably $200 worth of plants already.

After much reading, I think variegated liriope is what I really need for this one deeply shaded area with a low window. Sallyg was kind enough to show me here and let me know that this is often a "give away" plant.

I plan on attending the fall swap and was wondering if anyone had variegated liriope muscari plant to trade. I'm afraid I don't have much to offer, except for some chocolate chip ajuga and miscanthus from my 4-month-old garden.

Thank you all!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi SS, Nice to have you here. It is unlikely for Ric and I to make the fall swap as we will be traveling but there will also be at least one spring swap. Don't worry the swaps are more like huge plant giveaways than one for one swaps. You will really enjoy yourself at Critters swap this fall.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hi ssgardener, you found it. Welcome!

I gt the variegated liriope first from my dad as about three fat clumps. I have since divided it for years and let it grow into...11 clumps, and more. I use it clumpy as a border edge, and I use it spread a little thinned to fill a shady spot. I will probably wedge out a nice fat clump for the swwap (if you can come) and you can divide it up a lot and fill some area.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow sallyg, that's very generous of you! I'm looking forward to the swap and meeting all of you! I'm 80% sure I can make it at this point.

you guys too Jen!!! our whole house was rockin...gave me even more grey hair if that's possible lol

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That was so crazy!!! Esp when not used to having earthquakes
My ceiling lights were swinging....I was like "what the heck is going on" took a few seconds to fingure it out.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I was sitting outside, under my patio, transplanting Pregnant Onions in 4" clay pots...

I cannot tell you how weird it was to, all of a sudden, see the patio roof and the house moving.
I was like--Oh, my God! I hope the patio does not come apart from the house!!!
At the same time--I realized--that the earth was moving--and the structures were moving as part of it--
NOT individually! I was not scared---but, somewhat. perplexed.....And--I thought! We are having an earthquake!
The whole "thing" lasted only about 10 seconds--if that long....

Nothing was damaged--nothing fell off anything..etc....I walked the whole house!
Then spent about 45 minutes listening to all the freaked out stuff on TV. I guess they just HAVE TO do that!
Overkill! That's what it was with all the reporters and the news anchors....
HEY! FINALLY---something to talk about! Everybody trying to grab the audience.....

This was a first in my life--and only one of 3 such events here in MD. We just do not get earthquakes here!
THAT I found a bit scary! A 5.9 on the Richter scale! WOW!!! What's next?
They did say that the earthquake was 3.75 miles deep. Hmmm....Whasssup down there?????
Need to call my friend in NC--they are not that far from Richmond!!!

Gita

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I've started a thread for our quake experiences over here asking all in our area to check in
