What kind of birds nest did my son find? can you help me

My son found this nest on the front lawn under a tree. It's about 2.75" inches wide to the outer edges; inner cavity is 1.5" wide and 1" deep, entire structure is about 2" high. The bottom of the cavity is so so soft plant fluff which is also woven throughout. Then entire nest is just soft stuff, no twigs, very neat & tightly woven. We are in Manahawkin, I thought maybe a hummingbird?

My suspicion is it might be a Goldfinch nest. They use the white fluff of thistles as one of the nesting materials and it sounds about the right size. Maybe another here would know for sure.
