Spring of last year, I purchased a Black Jack fig through mail order. It was advertised as being a naturally small fig plant, and that's what I wanted. Celeste & Brown Turkey are the typical varieties in the New Orleans area, but they can get to be really large trees. Well, this Black Jack has grown into good sized bush, about 5' tall & wide. But it's the figs that are amazing. I've never seen such large figs!! They are averaging 7" and I can barely hold 2 of them in my hand! They taste is pretty good, but we've been having a lot of rain lately, so they are kind of watery right now. I'm only getting about 4 or 5 ripe figs a day, but the tree is still young & they are still a lot of green ones. I wanted to can some of these whole, but I will only be able to get a few of these giants into a pint jar. Better plan on making preserves instead. On hot biscuits, fig preserves are delicious!!
Giant Figs!
I got the plant from Bat Flora - http://www.bayflora.com/bjfig.html. It came in what they call a growers' pot. It's a deep, 4"x9" pot that allows for deep root development. The plant was about 3' tall, and almost totally leafless. I initially planted it in a large pot, and it immediately started to put out new growth. About 2 months later, we decided on the perfect place in the garden for it and planted it in the ground.

I'm wondering if you actually got a sport of the original variety. The Bay Flora site shows the Black Jack figs as pretty "normal" in size, and a Google search of other nurseries and photos of Black Jack figs all indicate a normal sized fig. Figs can change size over the years as the trees grow, but normally the fruit on smaller trees starts out smaller as well. Of course, in some fruit species if there were a lot fewer fruit than normal the remaining fruit can be larger. That's a given for peaches, apples, etc. but I wasn't aware that it happens in figs, at least not to the extent you're seeing. I'm very interested to hear about next year's crop . I hope you'll keep us informed.
