squash injury??

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Is it possible that brushing against zucchini and yellow squash plants could make my legs break out? Is there something toxic in the leaves?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8a)

Squash plants have little hairs on them and those bother some people. I try to not mess with them unless I have long sleeves on. Benadryl is my friend for those times that I forgot the long pants or sleeves... Hope you feel better soon!

No. but the stems and leaves can be prickly. Bare legs and sensitive skin could give result in skin irritation.

Janie - Tomatoes and Bean leaves do this to me. When I get in from the garden, I scrub my hands and arms with hot soapy water. That "cures" the problem immediately!

I don't grow squash, so am not sure if they would do the same thing to me.

Thanks, everybody!

yea there are some very sharp little spikes that stick off of the leaves and stems. happens to me as well.

I keep a container of baking soda and water to use after coming from the garden. Tomatoes really give me a rash with intense itching, but the baking soda works to stop it.

Great tip, Calalily!

Although I have nothing scientific to back this up, I believe itchy leaves keep bugs away! They probably make them itch, too.

(Now I'm starting to itch just thinking about it!)
