American Pokeweed, Inkberry, Pidgeonberry, Pokeberry
Phytolacca americana

This plant has grown into a 7 foot tree. In one of the driest years ever, it is loaded with berries. I have watched the birds harvest strips of berries and pluck the fruit off.

Actually, it was the same near my house on the Black sea coast back in that real dry season of 2008. The plant had grown about 7 feet in height, and it was all in those jucy berries. The berries are known to be poisonous. I notice the American Pokeweed is getting sort of ubiquitous on the Black sea shore and along the roads in the near by mountains. May be it's time to use it for natural ink production. lol

Here, the greens are edible when young and prepared correctly.

Ink may be an alternative use.

It sounds like the birds are spreading this plant far and wide.

This plant grows wild in Florida. Especially in pastures out in full sun.

BonnieGardens, I think Florida is very close to Sochi in terms of climate. Well, let's call those like pastures of heaven, to commemorate my favorite author- John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr.
