Bon ... early this spring i was given a dozen peacock orchid bulbs. none of them bloom for me. for the past 3-4 yrs. i have been raising asiatic & oriental lilies, & have been successful at it. basing from my experience with bulbs, the leaves should be left alone on the bulb till it turns yellow and die. leaving the leaves on the bulb to mature, allows the bulbs to be fed by those leaves, therefore the following season should bloom properly. having said that, i guess although assuming on my part, the peacock bulb leaves were abruptly cut but the sender, prior to sending it to me.
i learned this the hard way during my first try on lilies. being a novice on oriental bulbs, i cut off the blooms & leaves almost leaving only 6" of stalk on the bulb. the following year, i wondered why i never had any flower, even though the plants were given proper treatment & has grown prolific with lots of leaves but no blooms. did some reasearch, it was then i learned to better leave the flowers and leaves alone. so, far the past two years, the lilies has bloomed nicely, with bigger and more blossoms each season. btw... since i live in zone 8, we do have light sprinkling of snow during winter time. i just leave the pots of lilies outside. they seem to like the cold treatment. yes, i plant all my bulbs in pots, so when they bloom, i can bring them inside the house to enjoy their fragrance, instead of cutting the flowers & leaves. then bring them back outside the house after 3-4 weeks of enjoying their fragrance and blossoms. although the peacock bulb did not bloom for me this season, i will leave them alone, and hope next season they bring me the joy i am ancious to experience.

What I neat idea!! Thanks so much for the advice.. I will leave them out and mulch "em!!I recieved them from the catalog, I believe the michigan bulb co. I got lots of them, I think they give them to you when you order other stuff. Only about half even came up, but I'm grateful for that!! Thanks!!!

That's where mine came from too,Bon' They started slow but the second year went wild, lol, love them' This time of year I keep reminding my "tidyville friends" to not cut off the foliage, that's next years' food(for blooms) for the bulbs' Good luck,Sis'

Bon ... it is my pleasure to share gardening experiences albeit positive or negative. experience i believe is the best teacher of all.

it might interest u to know too that each spring, i change the growing medium of the bulb. although it is not highly recommended, i do it to give the bulbs a fresh start. so far, they have not disappoint me yet ;).
