i have to say that in my florida garden, the hummer favorite is, hands down, the red/orange Justicia...followed by the Aloe maculata (when it's blooming).

Black and Blue Salvia is a favorite.

I have flame acanthus, Mexican firecracker, Texas Star Hibiscus (red) and turks cap. For the first time ever we have hummers in the summer. Usually just a few passing through when they are migrating. Because of the now 31 days of over 100 (today 106-tomorrow 109) I have run my sprinkler system everyday to help the trees. The hummers love it and are all over the above mentioned. Even had one drink from the bird bath and get down in it. Couldn't believe my eyes.

corrie, do you have any big trees around your place? i don't know if it helps but as hot as it always is here in florida in summer, the hummers seem to spend a lot of time in my two big cedar trees when they aren't feeding. maybe it isn't enough to have a food source but also to have large shade trees? i don't know, just tossing out ideas.

Where is casselberry? I'm just north of Tampa New Port Richey. I have 2 summer guest. One male and one female RTH they just love the coral honeysuckle and the mexican sage, firebush andBlack and blue salvia. I can't seem to interest them in the lions tail though. Don

I have had an amazing year with hummers this year, though not with butterflys. My gardens are planted with lots of things to attract hummers, but this year I added feeders to the gardens and it has been incredible. They are still using the flowers to snack on, beebalm(jacob cline) is a favorite; but the main nourishment seems to come from the feeders. I also started making my own nectar with sugar and water instead of buying the red pre-made stuff. They seem to like the homemade nectar better!

Elmhurst, IL(Zone 5a)

Anyone have this problem?

I have a "antique" glass hummingbird feeder with 4 flower ports and it hangs from a shepherd's hook and the darn squirrels have recently decided to hang by their back feet, grabbing on to a flower and just sucking up the hummingbird "juice". All this while their is a large birdbath with a dripper going at all times!

Any suggestions?

Geez, I thought it was bad enough dealing with the squirrels at the seed feeders!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Move it from the shepherd's hook and put a baffle on it. I had to do that with my woodpecker bars because of the squirrels.
