Hibiscus DJ O'Brien

West of Brisbane, Australia

I just bought this lovely hibiscus at the local hardware/garden centre and was wondering if it was correctly labelled--the picture shows a yellow flower. the only photo of DJ O'Brien on Dave's Garden at http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/62864/ does have the same colour as mine, but it doesn't seem to be a semi-double. Does anyone know what the real DJ O'Brien looks like?

I don't think the photo in the plant label is correct. A Google search shows that you have the correct cultivar.

Funny thing is that the photos in your links show a flower that is more orange than mine. And one describes the flowers as double apricot, the other as semi-double orange/tangerine. This cultivar might have an identity problem!

I suspect that the photo used on the label is a generic one to denote a semi/double bloom. Anyway, there's only one photo in the plant files, so I might post a photo of it there.

Hibiscus often change colors depending on the weather. Usually in cooler weather the flowers will be darker. You might want to wait and see how it does when it is warmer.

I didn't know that--it's winter now, so will be interesting to see if the colour changes in summer. Thanks!
One more pic showing it with a common pink hibiscus with its winter bloom, which now that I think about it, *is* different from the summer bloom, which is lighter and shot thru with more of that silvery white. And bigger, too.

You are welcome. I love the deeper, more intense cool weather colors.

I'll try and post a photo of a summer bloom--that colour change is quite astonishing! I'm used to it with brugmansias but didn't expect it with hibiscus ...

This is a collage I put together a few years ago showing the colors of the flowers on the same plant at different times of the year.

I saw one today on line that was in a catalog. They had a photo when it first bloomed which was yellow with a orange shading. When the bloom matured it was totally yellow and a paler yellow.

My tropical Hibiscus blooms here last one day. Is that normal? I am a rookie at Tropical hibiscus. I purchased 2 last year, over wintered in the garage garden area and they get morning sun and are planted in a pot, in a pot on automatic irrigation.

That's a great collage, ardesia. I'm inspired to create one myself when I get a few more summer photos!
Sharon, I'm (obviously!) no expert, but it's normal for hibiscus flowers to last only one day. So you're not doing anything wrong :-) In fact, if that's a photo of your own hibiscus, then you seem to be doing everything right LOL

Thank you s much. I am so amazed that there are at least 5 blooms on each plant every day. AND, I do not have a clue what I am doing. But I am loving it. Thanks for your input because Tropical Hibiscus are not the norm in Las Vegas but these guys love where they are located. Mostly heat but little direct sun.

Thanks again. Sharon. 69 soon and still learning.

How wonderful is it to be growing something that is not common in your area--such a thrill! You've obviously found the right spot for it.
If your plant can be seen from the street, chances are you'll be inspiring passers-by to try growing hibiscus themselves :-)

All I meet is the gardeners that say their clients want what is in my garden.

I had a neighbor here yesterday with her two "Gardeners". She wanted this and she wanted that. I told her I could recommend and they could plant but unless you had a 69 year old gardener to go out for about 4 to 5 hours a day to look them over it would not last a month. Her gardeners were not happy but she is a "high and mighty attorney, sand she got the message. She wanted her soil to be the same as mine. Dark. Mine has been composted for years and organic soil delivered that was composted.

They told her they would bring in forest big chuck bark and that would do that. I said, BS.

They were here Friday so Monday should be interesting. So glad these gardeners are not part of the MOB.
