I saw this small Empodonix flycatcher along the upper Red River in NM today. Elevation about 9,000 feet, coniferous forest. Breast was pale yellow, no frontal pic. I'm leaning toward a Hammond's.
CLOSED: Empidonix I.D.
Pass!
I'll take another look tomorrow (too late to go digging through books now!)

A bit more information. The bird had a definite green tint to the back which makes me lean to Hammond's. But, Cordillerans are often spotted around here and the habitat fits. I never heard the bird call.
Sorry, been forgetting!
Tricky as ever with Empidonax spp., but I'd tentatively suggest Cordilleran Flycatcher - the bill looks too stout, and too orange on the lower mandible, for Hammond's. But I'm not 100% certain on it.

Thanks for your input, resin. I agree on the beak, I think I'm leaning toward Cordilleran now. Neat little birds whatever the label.
