mac laptop with iphoto

Have had this laptop for 2 years and still can't upload pictures. On the program itself there are buttons for FaceBook, email, albums etc.
For instance when I am on DG and attempt to select a file I have to
1. Go to Finder
2. Go to Harddrive
3. Go to apps
4. Iphoto
5. from there I cannot open iphoto to find a particular photo.

I know this is supposed to be easy and I uploaded pictures all the time when I had windows (which i don't like) so where am I loosing the trail?

Help, please. thank you
