Howdy from a newbie to the forum.
We planted two apricot saplings last year and got about five pounds of fruit this spring. Boy, they were good. Now we want to put in peaches. Our number one desire is taste, not appearance, size, or yield (the opposite of super market peach varieties). I remember from living in Georgia a variety that had just a shade of pink, barely more than pasty white. Fabulous flavor.
We live at altitude 2400 feet, zone 9A I think. A typical winter is first frost / freeze about December 15th, last about March 15th, night time lows 28 - 30 about 30 times, day time highs 35 to 60. Last winter was colder, several over night lows in the teens and a half dozen or so days with highs about freezing.
Recommendations? On-line sources?
Peach variety for the desert southwest?
You're at about the same elevation as Tucson, so nurseries there might be a better source than those in Phx.
frogyman, do you grow peaches?
I have a nectarine tree that is 3-4 yrs old and produced lots of blossoms this year, but the winds blew them off and I only got 1 fruit. I also have an Anna apple and grapes, but no peaches, though nectarines are just peaches that have no fuzz.
