I put my eggs in yesterday and three thermometers in,two acurite digital and the one that came with incbubator from incubator warehouse.com(digital to),the acurites read 100 and the other 100.6 and the warehouse one 98.8,which one should I go by?Wll off to the chicken swap, hope I sell all my silkies that I am taking down
Which one is right?
This was my problem when I was hatching. I had 2 cheapie Walmart thermometers, One very good one of Ann's... and one from Brinsea I paid like $20 bucks for... I even had a couple of the "mercury" thermometers and they were all different! I think I ended up with 4 from Walmart and found that they were at least all consistent.
I switched to just the Brinsea thermometer and had like 2 failed hatches... I had the best luck with the cheapie ones from Walmart that have the humidity reading too.
Honestly, that is something I fought with a LOT.. So you just posted a great question and I'm convinced no single thermometer was exact... Even the really good one Ann had such good luck with. I never was comfortable that I knew the exact temp inside my bator at any given time... Just so happens when I had 3 that were close.. I went with that average..
There was a time that I really was on a mission to find out which one is right? How do you know? I learned.. You don't.. You go with what worked for the hatch and try not to focus on the number.
I must say I have to agree with ZZ's on this. I had basically the same experience...I stuck with the acurite from walmart, it always served me well. I had three at the same time and all three hatched out very successful hatches. I personally don't believe it's that scientific. Everyone knows your supposed to put new babies in a one hundred degree brooder, and then drop the temps five degrees every week for about two months. Well I tested that philosophy by putting them in ninety degree temps and watched them very closely. They all did just fine and I droped the temps five degrees every week. Why did I do that? Just to try and find out how critical the temps were to the babies. Its just not quite as critical as some would lead you to believe in my opinion. Same with hatching, temps are important but I don't believe they are quite as critical as some would have us believe. I mean look at the power outages, I lost power on one hatch for six hours and was sure they were gonners, I ended up with a great hatch...People talk about bator Lockdowns...That always made my laugh...LOCKDOWN????????I was in and out of my bators on many occassions, maybe not a great idea, but just not as critical as some would have us believe...Thats just my opinion...Sometimes I think us so called chickenheads really are nutz...We don't for the most part worry that much about our human babies...At least not from what I have seen...Hay
I did test the himidity on one by putting in the freezer bag with salt and water for 24hrs and it was suppose to read 75% by then and it only read 72% so I will go 3 % higher when reading it.I`ll leaver that one in there for the humdity reading and the acurite for the temp. Thanks for answering my questions.Only sold two silkies today both pullits,Thought sure I would sell more, but our swap is so small and the same peaple come all the time.
If you have good humidity and can get the humidity up quickly.. then "lockdown" is not that critical.. but if you struggle to get high humidity, you risk getting sticky chicks.. that's the main issue with "lockdown" :) I'm sure you would get a kick out of that.
With temps.. as long as it's close, and constant.. Hay is right, it's not scientific.. I just go by the hatch.. if they are too early, cool it down a degree or two. :)
Thats why I love you so, You always manage to say it better than I do...LOL. I'm so not good with words. I do however understand myself...LOL...I think...Crum! ZZ's it seems as though we never talk anymore, have you found another LOVE? :o( ...Hay
