Is it possible to save a plumeria after the stem has begun to soften? It's getting soft in the middle section of the branch. Trunk is still solid, and they appear to still be growing leaves. They were pretty dry today when I noticed the softness. Do they ever soften from too little water? I'll post pic's tomorrow.
911! In need of urgent care for Plumerias!
soft isn't a killer. brown from rot and soft are no good. keep those plumies hydrated. it's hot out there man! =)
Such a relief! I did water them when I noticed they were dry, thinking evasive action could be taken today. I'll give them another dose today.
Thanks, David
you had green and soft?
Yes. I just went out and they already look better. Really, they should be potted up. The pic shows what happens when you put worms in pots. They eat half of the soil!
I've looked into dirtbags and similar products in town. They are rather short in comparison to traditional nursery pots, so I'll have to go up to 10's. If I buy more than four, the savings is more than the shipping.
Thanks
oops. for some reason I can't find the new pics. I'll try again later.
haha! i was wondering where the pics were. i like the squat pots better than the tall ones. look forward to seeing the pics.
can we see the whole plumie? =)
what soil do you use?
Geez! I'll half to restart again...I could probably swing it.
haha! no rush. LOL just always good to see the whole plant. you can tell more about it if you see the entire tree.
I'm pushing pause right now on the movie.:)
Here's one. A couple years ago the tips rotted in the spring. I snapped off the dead part, and one side branched.
Edited to say. The branched growth after this years inflo seems stretched. Too much nitrogen? I've heard they don't need much.
Edited to say. Flowers are red.

David, you moved those babies from Southern California to here. HOT AND DRY. Did you move them on the rock and next to the wall for the photo or is that where they live. If that is where they are all day, that is way to hot. Wall gets hot, rock gets hot. Even after the sun goes down the wall and the rocks do not cool down. I am not a Plumeria expert but I am a hot wall and a hot rock expert.
Sorry to intrude because I am not a Plumeria expert. Just a Mother.
No apology needed. Point taken. They are partially shaded by a fig tree all day, but I know I'd roast sitting there all day. Again, point taken.
Thanks
P.S. I'm trying to catch up in prop.:)
Plumeria beginner here.....
I need to re-pot some that I received in a swap... do have some perlite here for my hibbies and I see that you like them for the plumerias.......
what type soil do you recommend and ratio : perlite ?
I see you like the palm soil?
Another question... I gave my Mother in Law some of the small plants and she re-potted hers immediately and they are huge now.... so it would appear to me that plumeria (like koi) get as large as their environment allows ? is that the case ? if so... I'll put them in bigger pots as opposed to one pot up...
thank you for your help !
Mary
Some sort of deficiency? I generally let the leaves fall off on their own. I don't like to see them bleed.
lower leaves will yellow and fall even during the growing season. it only when upper leaves are doing it that i'd be worried.
This years attempted inflo. Probably not enough water?
And stretched growth.
BTW These are planted in palm & cactus mix with some extra pearlite.
i don't still understand the distance between the petioles. i do know that it is variety dependent, but water and fertilizer can have an effect.
i am trying out supersoil palm & cactus mix.
# 2 : No inflo this year. Though I think this one is yellow.
the plumies look good. might need to spray them with water to get the dust off. i give them a hawaiin shower occasionally. just can't do it too much here because of our hard water.
plumies do not usually bloom each year until they are mature. then again, that can depend on the variety, too.
Is bird poop considered foliar feeding?
yeah, on the underside of the leaf mixed with water. LOL that's where you spray when you foliar feed.
This one is white. I like the growth on this one. Stems are staying thick. Leaves aren't so spaced apart. This one also has much more pearlite added to the palm & cactus soil.
obviously, a different variety.
These seem pretty healthy. Good even green. No yellowing. Fertilized exactly the same as the previous two. I don't get it.
Thats all Folks!
latter two looking good, too. clean those leaves! LOL
good points sharon! you know you climate well. you definitely can give advice.
i use bagged mix and do not add any more perlite or pumice. in the desert i can do that because it is dry and hot most of the time during the growing season. yes, they will appreciate more space. just don't give them too much space.
Thanks tucson. Most of what's on the leaves are deposits from misters without a calcium filter. I've got them out of the mist now and I figured I would let them grow past and drop the crusty leaves on their own. The monstera on the other hand will be getting a new home (inside) soon so I'll be cleaning it's leaves before moving it in.
I never knew that about foliar feeding. It's gonna be tough to train the birds. They do a great job of eating figs my though. Quid pro quo little birdies, quid pro quo.
I've been procrastinating ordering the dirt bags. What is the latest I can transplant?
If you like I can post more pics of what I'm talking about with the spacing of the petioles.
David
i would transplant no later than august. you are not changing out the soil, right? if not, then you shouldn't disturb the root ball much and there will be no transplant shock. i do not know how the fabric pots work during the winter. this will be my first winter with them. you could just wait until next springtime, too.
oh, i am familiar with the petiole spacing. no pics needed.
watching any movies today? =)
Nope, no movies. Not yet anyway. Right now I'm gonna watch Matt Latos and the Padres beat the Giants!
I just got done watching the Woman's World Cup. I had no clue of any of the rules but it was so exciting. I do not think I could watch if I had someone I know playing. Japan did a great job beating us. Great game.
I heard the news while watching the Pads.
Giants scored right after I sent the last post. I thought I jinxed them. Now the Pads just scored two!!!
I'm also fertilizing and watering my palm seedlings. I got a fish tank to clean too.
BTW the Padres lost yesterday. 4-3 in 11 innings.
how are your plumies doing dave?
They are doing just fine, thanks for asking. The inflorescence has fallen off long ago. Everything looks great though. They are holding more leaves at a time than ever before. I probably never watered enough when in San Diego. I never did get around to potting them up or getting the Dirt Bags. That can wait till spring.
I am trying to save one that my folks had given up on. It was just a stick with a small amount of new growth (the kind when they're just coming out of dormancy). I'll post some pics on a new thread tomorrow.
David
