On a fluke yesterday a nurse was checking out my booth at the Farmers Market - She asked if I sold Aloes and I said no I just grow for personal pleasure and would be glad to pot up a pup for her...after more chatting she relayed she was a nurse at our local cancer treatment facility and they give each patient an Aloe to take home to use as a soothing balm to their Chemo'd area/s I told her she could have all my pups for free if that was the case and I'd ask around to see if anyone had anymore..
so if anyone has extra plants they care to share I am willing to pay postage to get them here...
I am going to their office this week to try and help them out with why some of the pups they already have are not doing so hot...
I have a huge mother plant (about 3' around) I was thinking of cutting parts of a few of the older parts into pieces to put in freezer bags for patients to also take home for immediate relief (some of them are nearly 2' long so one should make quite a few 3" pieces) if anyone has suggestions on how to 'clean' or sanitize the cutting before I cut them into smaller pieces your advice is appreciated...
Thanks for reading...and I hope you can help!
Deanna
Anyone have extra Aloe plants or pups?
Deanna, I have plenty of this one to share: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54452/
Do you think it has the same healing properties as the more traditional aloes you find in the big box aisles?
OK, I just did a bit of research and found it is the Aloe Vera that has the most healing properties; not the one I have in abundance. If they just want them for a living plant to take home you are still welcome to mine. This is an interesting site you might want to share with the nurse.

Thanks Ardesia!!! I will share the link with her tomorrow when I see them...I was able to pull another 3 pups off my aloe so I've got about 8 to give them...it's a start :) I appreciate, as always, your willingness to jump in and assist...you rock!
today I received this awesome care package for Toumey Cancer Center from a wonderful DG member - not sure if she wants me to mention her name so for now I will not to respect her privacy...but all I can say is a huge THANK YOU ...opening the box and reading your letter literally made me cry...cry with happiness that gardeners are such giving souls...
What beautiful plants!
This is timely information. My neighbor is undergoing chemo and has a bad rash. I think a bottle of pure aloe will do the trick, since I don't have an aloe plant.
Entlie
They are! you have to understand Alice that the Cancer Center has been trying to propagate their own plants and a lot of the 'babies' are only 2" tall...so to receive this box of 'ready to go home' plants...to say it made my day is truly an understatement...
Entilie - the nurse told me if one of their patients ran out of aloe they did suggest the 99% pure gel...but she also said alot of the patients said the plant worked best...it's worth her going to a big box store and grabbing one...also...Ardesia's posted link to free aloes is worth checking out...Randall Parks the owner has responded to me with bulk pricing and I have to say...he's trying very hard to help :)
