I planted sweet potato slips in mid March in my Square Foot Garden (12 inches deep). The tag on the slips said 100 days (early July), but when I reached into the soil today to get a sample of the first ones, that I thought would be ready, there were just roots, the plants look very healthy. This is my first season gardening and ha had some successes but I don't know what to think about this. Should I leave them in for the rest of the Summer and check again in the fall or dig them out and try something else. I am in Austin Texas 8b.
My sweet potatos are duds.
Sweet potatoes mature in the fall, don't dig them up, if the plant looks good you will most likely get tubers later.
Thank you. The guy I pulled out spent the afternoon laying in the sun. I put him back in the ground in hope that he will survive. On to Fall :-)
Do you have more than one plant?
Yes, I have about 16 of them. I planted 2 per square (square ft garden).
Great! it should be really good then, I love sweet potatoes too.
I have a bunch growing in my wishing well ,grew the slips from a tuber that I got from a local grower and they were delicious so want to try some of my own ..the man I buy mine from doesn't harvest until late Oct.
OK, I waited till October and dug up half of them (it is still in the high 80s here in Austin) they look great and taste good too. I'll wait till it gets real cold and then harvest the remaining, I heard that they get sweeter during the last few weeks after it gets cold....Oh, and the guy I pulled out and replanted-he did good and produced two sweet potatoes ;-)
Wonderful!! I am very happy for you, Happy Eating !!!
Yay! I bet you'll have fresh yams for Thanksgiving!
Bad news for me my grower reports a total crop failure BUMMER will have to find another supply as I know I don't have enough to feed me .Last year I bought 2 bushels and that is a lot of sweet taters
