Every time I go to the feed store and have a decision to make about what bag of feed to get this time. I don't know about you guys but I've gotten feed before that my chickens turn their beaks up at. They refused to eat it so I started reading the labels and talk about confused! I can't even pronounce half the stuff in the ingredients. The so called organic feeds are the same way. If I get the scratch feed it consists of millet, cracked corn, small amount of cracked wheat and oats. Lots of millet that the chickens never eat and that's a waste of my egg money. What do you feed your chickens so that they get a good natural diet and not all of the garbage that's in a bag of chicken feed?
natural chicken feed?
We just use Layena layer crumbles or pellets. It would be great to go organic but there's nothing in our local feed store and shipping would be prohibitive. Still, it looks to me as though the feed just consists of grain and Vitamin E to preserve it; no antibiotics or other medication.
We get it from a local co-op.
Just plain egg mash. They grind it themselves, so the mix is always the same. Just grain, no antibiotics or meds.
They charge according to grain price. I pick up every Wednesday. It was .19678 ¢ per pound.
Hens love it & clean up everything.
