My neighbor has generously let me pick the figs from her tree. How do I know when...easy to pull off?
Harvesting Figs
Ripe figs plump up, lighten in color, and tell you they are ripe. If you have any doubt, they are not ready yet.
One of my figs start to turn color from the green to a lighter shade and u can see a pinkish color from the hole in the top of the fig. I have another kind of fig that turns dark when it's ripe
They're ripe when they fall on the ground! LOL At least that's when our dogs would eat them from the neighbor's tree.
NO! dont let the dogs have them. Asside from the fact that they are so delicious they go for aprox $6 lb, it's a crime to let them just fall to the ground.
Wow 6 dollars a lb. I attacked my neighbors tree yesterday and got enough to make a batch of raspberry preserves. Now I have to go to the store for Jello and sugar. :o)
Good advice. The ready ones they come off easily.
And pick up ones on the ground for feeding your worms in your compost :o)
haha! My neighbor will think I am just a considerate soul when I sweep them up but my real motives...only you guys know! By the way, I was only able to pick about 10. If I want to make jam should I refrigerate them until more ripen?
Yes I would
They will ferment pretty quick unless you pick them under-ripe.
You should post pics of their tree and fruit cause everyone loves pictures.
