So I have a lavender Ameraucana broody on a pile of eggs that I didn't have very high hopes for.. She is not in the best place for babiez, but the maternity ward is full..
I went to feed and hear her calling babiez!! I look and I think there are 8.. but they were moving so fast, I couldn't count.. There was a pile of eggs still in the nest and ANTS WERE COMING OUT of the pip holes!! I saved 3.. no others are pipped..
They are warming in the seat of my pickup right now. LOL I'll put them back when they can travel. I have no brooder, nothing.. Just the heat of the sun. :) It's hot in the pickup, but they are in the shade, so they will be fine.
2 roos and a pullet.. Hope their feet straighten out, cause I can't do any flip flops in that pen.
Saved 3 babiez!
so lucky you found them poor things
aww precious
How apt: a lavender scoop of lavender chicks! Good save!
They are beautiful.
They are so pretty.
are you saying the ants killed the rest of them?
Jan
They are all up and walking! They have been in the pickup all day.. Now I'm gonna go stick em in with their mom. Now that mom has all 12 she didn't even notice. LOL The babiez are a little wobbly, but they knew what to do.
No meadowyck, the ants were coming out of the shells before they got a chance to hatch. They were dried out really bad. I was so afraid I'd have crippled babiez.. but they are all doing well.
I am amazed that you were able to save those babies. Are there more eggs yet to hatch?
Wonderful news :).
Now, "2 roos and a pullet". Is this because of the combs? I'm still trying to will some of my young mutts to be hens. They can shed those shiny soon-to-be saddle feathers, right??
Sure...happens all the time.
I KNEW it!! Thanks, porkpal, you are truly a Pal.
I shall tell them...
Good save girl! They are so cute!
waiting for updated pics.... now come on, you know we lives for pics.... especially when they are of animals...
Jan
No, the 7 eggs left I took out, thinking I'd put them in a nice warm place just in case.. (I had one hatch on the counter, waiting to go in the garbage before!) so I put them in a bucket, but forgot them and they were in the sun all day.. :( So sad. But hey.. 12 babiez from all her own eggs is plenty!!
So it's a myth that they loose fertility after 7 days. LOL I knew it all the time.
These babiez are "throwbacks" cause some of them have straight combs. I am not concerned, cause I'm keeping them.. That's how I knew there were 2 roos and a pullet.. a straight comb roo's lil comb is folded over at hatch time.. Normally it's hard to see, but when you pick egg shell and membrane off their eyes and beaks, you get a pretty good look!! LOL
I'd love to get more pics, but my back is totally out and they are in the coop from hell that I have to climb in on all 4s.. (that's why there were so many eggs piled up) Fat chance I'll get pics for a while. I'll try... but no promises yet... it's gonna be in the triple digits for a week, so I'm probably gonna spend a lot of time right her at my desk!!
Throw back to what? Is another breed used to develop the lavender color?
This is not my specialty Porkpal... From what I understand, when there is a "new" color, straight comb can come out. Not all of these are straight comb, but the mom was, so there are several. I just know that it's not desirable. I am not sure of what makes it show up.
I didn't intend to use this hen, these babiez are a result of me not getting in there to gather eggs.
They are a lovely color - cute little accidents.
LOL Thank you Porkpal.
I lost one baby last night, but I'm not surprised.. it was dragging it's insides behind it when it hatched.. I still have 11 and they are doing soooo good. I was worried about them getting water, cause I have it up on blocks.. but I saw them popping up there like it was nothing! So I guess they figured it out!
The 7 eggs that didn't hatch that I left in the sun all day are going to be of very good use after all. I am going to put a couple of them in the coop and let the jerks that have been stealing my eggs get one hell of a surprise! Take these you jerks! LOL
Great idea!
ZZ - awesome idea!
Now I just need to figure out what to do with my duck eggs before they turn into petrified eggs.
Please keep us posted on what happens with the egg thieves!
LOL It's a miracle! The sign I made that says "I don't care who you are, if I catch you, I'll call the cops" is gone! It vanished in thin air!
And to make it more miraculous... I got 5 EGGS today!!! Are you like totally blown away or what??
They were so kind as to leave my rotten eggs alone.. LOL I'm so tickled..
Amazing that the sign vanished! What you really need is that potassium permanganate or whatever it is, that indelibly stains hands when they touch it.
I wonder how they knew to leave your rotten eggs alone. But at least you got 5 eggs.
Do you think they're following you on DG?
No.. I don't think they were following me... I really don't know what happened.. I hate to accuse people with no proof other than an open door, things moved around and scared chickens.. but I really don't care what it was... I got eggs and it makes me very happy!!
It really hasn't been any fun having chickens the last couple months.. Every day I feel like my space was violated, and I wonder what happened to my chickens while I was gone... I watch as much as I possibly can, but not having them close has not been fun.
I just hope the drama is over now, and I can enjoy my own stuff and my own birds.. :)
There is nothing worse than that feeling of being violated! You can rationalize a four legged or a crawley varmit, but to know that a human is taking advantage is just plain nasty! Knowing you , if the thief was hungry or in need all he had to do was ask!!!!
You got that right Eufaula.. It's a creepy feeling.. constantly wondering. If someone was hungry, I'd give em more than just a few eggs! :)
All 11 popping jumping babiez are doing great.. Lil buggars and doing flight practice with their lil stick wings.. soo cute!
Thank God they haven't hurt or taken your chickens.
They are acting more like my chickens now... but for a while, I couldn't even get them to come out of the coop. It is nice to see them come running full blast and skid to a stop when they see me now. LOL My favorite part of chores. :)
I have 10 teens and they are even starting to run to see me! I love it!
