Preventing and managing spider mites

Fairfax, CA(Zone 9a)

I just had to denude a 10 year old, 10' tall buddleia I found to have spider mites, along with a couple of other treasured plants.

I've just planted a Charles Grimaldi brugmansia in a half wine barrel. I've read they're vulnerable to these mites. Is there anything to do besides spray the underside of the leaves every other day? I tried Bayer 3 in 1 on the buddleia Santana before I realized mites were what's ailing it. But since they're aracnids instead of insects, it didn't work.

I did try a search, but it's so hard to find the reference to the search topic in long threads. Forgive me if this is oft asked.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen, If I am just battling regular spider mites I use a product called Avid. You have to spray either early in the a.m. for after the sun goes down in the evening and cover the entire plant top and bottoms of the leaves. If I don't have Avid on hand, I will use any insecticide that says it's for spider mites and mix that with a little horticulteral oil and again spray the entire plant covering top and underside of all leaves. If I have broad mites to deal with I use a product called Forbid. It is expensive to buy the regular sized bottle but if you do a search on Ebay or go to BGI's classifieds you can buy a small amount. It only takes 1/8 tsp. per gallon of water. With Forbid you don't have to cover the entire plant for it too work. My personal routine now that I know about Forbid is to spray all my plants before I take them out of the greenhouse in the Spring and then again late summer. In doing this I seldom have a problem with spider mites or broad mites anymore.

Thanks, JM. Since writing this query, I've discovered a method a thorough and smart man over on GW discovered, and am trying. It's Wilt-Pruf, originally used to protect evergreens from freeze. Apparently it also prevents mites from taking hold, and may be easier & less costly to deal with than the Avid & Forbid, which I knew about from the Rosemania website. We'll see how this works.
