OK guys I have to confess, I've gone and done it. I stopped at the nursery and bought (oh, this is so painful) o-n-a-m-e-n-t-a-l-s. Yes I did. My daughter is just agahst. I explained to her that I want to plant Chanterais melons and that big empty spot in the front yard is perfect but the HOA won't let me so I'm going to plant the ornamentals around them to camoflage them just like Abraham did when he put Sarah in the chest when the went to Egypt. She caught on real fast. She likes melons she knows the HOA is our deadly enemy. I even got some with yellow flowers to diguise them even more.
You know I think the sweetness factor just went up by a power of 10.
OK, I'm ready to take my smacks with the ruler
Good job!!
Yep!!! Their value is definetly beyond the price of rubies! I'll share seeds if anyone wants them after we've had them for desert!
I have Charentais producing all over the garden this year. I've been calling it my "melon year". We saved seeds laqst summer from two that were very sweet, the rest are volunteers.
That's hilarious! We also have the dreaded *HOA*! I called them the Neighborhood Nazi's when I first moved to Houston but after all, they do keep the old camaros up on blocks out of the front yards!! Good luck sneaking your melons!
I think it should be illegal for HOA's to tell you what you can and cannot planted in your own garden! Even the Whitehouse grows vegetables where the front lawn used to be!

Honey
That's right, and we're only 20 min away from the White House. Most of the people on our block say they'll vote for me if I run for the board which I think I'm going to do. Guess what platform I'll run on. Michelle puts up with two kids every morning just like I do. Why should she get to have sweet potatoes in the front yard and I don't?
yehudith - good for you! You'll need to read up on the by-laws of the association. I onced lived in a condominium where the by-laws stated that 75% of the members had to agree before a change could be made.
If it wasn't for deer/rabbits roaming the neighborhood at night, I'd have veggies growing in the front yard, too!
Go Yehudith!! Besides the eye appeal, the flowers should help draw BEES to your garden, which are a definite plus when it comes to veggies!
