Has anyone ever ordered Brug seeds from B&T World seeds? I would really like to grow some Brugs from seed this winter but haven't heard too much information about this company.I thought this would be a great winter hobby to keep from getting cabin fever. What better way to spend the long cold days than watching little Brugs sprouting.Does anyone know about the reliability of this company before I send them an order?
Seeds
I have ordered from Pureland and Valleygrow. Both are in the US. I'm almost positive that someone here has mentioned buying from B & T.
A couple of years ago, (Before I had the INternet) I tried to buy a catalogue from B&T. Got the catalogue, but they wound up sending me my check back, saying they couldn't cash it over there.(?) Do have have a large minimum order or something? And have you tried LeBonJardinier for seeds?
Seeds from Le Bon Jardinier are excellent. They have some wonderful crosses. Germination was excellent too. If you live in the States, you may have problems with B & T seeds as they are from England and supposedly you can't get seeds from there any more. Check out the posts on the seed trading forum. There was a bunch of info there.
if anyone is ordering from LeBon Jardinier soon, please let me know, I want some of their seeds. There is a $50 minimun and if I spent that all at one time in one place, hubby would die (okay, I would:) but they have a great special on some euro cross seeds I'd love to have.
I have checked out LeBonJardinier and they have beautiful plants and a nice selection of seeds but I really wanted to try to grow some Sanguinea since it does well in cooler weather and Peaches and Cream along with a couple of others. These don't seem to be on their list. It seems like B&T might be a problem to order from so I'll continue looking.I will check out Pureland and Valleygrow also. Thanks tiG, MsBatt and brugcrazy for your help.
I know you can get sanguinea from valleygrow.
Thanks tiG.
if you go to Pureland, you will have a bigger/better selection. http://www.ethnobotanicals.com/PureLandCatalogAC.html
Still not very big, but it's the only place I could find aurea.
I don't think you can get peaches and cream seeds, is a hybrid. i have gotten rid of all my P&C, just too slow growing for me, will be growing the maya, supposed to grow faster and root easier, when i find cuttings.
Arlene, Didn't know P&C was a slow grower. For this part of the country the faster the plant grows the better chance that I will see blooms during the summer.I'll also keep my eyes open for a Maya since it grows faster. Thanks for the info.
some of us will have seeds to harvest also, snowhermit. i have at least one seed pod on about 7 or so plants, one plant with many. don't know when they will be ready, but quite a few of us have seed pods, and you are welcome to share mine. at least a couple of us have rooted stems with seed pods! seems that happens when you have a green thumb and your plants get huge....
((((((((Arlene)))))))) :)
ack!!! you mean I could have gotten these seeds a long time ago?????? thanks:)
I know that this is a dumb question to you seasoned Brug growers but if you order for instance the Charles Grimaldi xEuropean cultivar seeds do you get all the same plants from these seeds or are they mixed seeds from different cultivars?
I grew the versicolor x euro seeds this Spring from LBJ. A lot of the plants have very different leaves from the other plants out of the same batch of seeds. None have flowered yet, so I won't know what they look like until they flower. Anticipating quite a variety of blooms. Hope this helps.
brugcrazy, Yes it does help. I love surprises. There are so many different Brugs out now I think it would so cool to plant a pkt of Brug seeds and not know what may come out.You just may find that very special Brug in that packet of seeds.Would be great to have different ones to hybridize with too.
snowhermit, you have turned into such an addict!!! i enjoy the company! if i remember brugman right, the seeds could turn out all kinds of ways. i have 2 more hybrids with blooms, one i am 99% sure is going to be a versicolor, another isn't, and i have buds on my tiny little ecuador pink...2 feet tall! didn't expect it this year.
Each and every seed in a given seedpod can produce a different plant, due to the miracle of gene reassortment! This is why named hybrids are propagated by cuttings ONLY, because cuttings are genetically identical to the parent plant. Even if you were to cross a hybrid back to itself, gene reassortment would ensure that only 1/4 of the resulting seeds would be identical to the parent.
Judith,
You are absolutely correct.
Has anyone tried to graft one Brug to another one? I'm going to have a friend of mine show me how to graft then I'll have one Brug that blooms two different flowers.

Glory: I have a brug planted in the front yard with frosty pink blooming on one side and charles grimaldi on the other. I have no idea how it happened. It came out of one pot and there is no way I would've put 2 different plants in one pot. I've had this plant for years and it never did that before. Looks like another one might be doing the same thing. I can't figure it out. Didn't get a good picture as it didn't bloom nearly as heavily as the others did. Any ideas?
LOL Arlene, and who should I blame for this addiction???? It seems to me I remember someone telling me not to worry, they would make it all the way to NH in the heat of the summer.Ring a bell??? Now see what I have become? A crazed Brug addict who dreams at night of having one of each kind.
Brugcrazy,
Beats me but I have heard this before....a Brug changing. It seems like that might happen with one that was a mix of two different Brugs...kind of like the other parent showing up after a generation or two. What are we creating here? LOL
If the weather holds and I can get some good pictures, I'll post one. Weirdest thing in the world and it looks like another one that's been in a pot for years is doing the same thing. Flowered a very large frosty pink on the very bottom of the plant, 8" up only and the top ( 6-8 feet high) is flowering with something very different, still in bud form but not a frosty pink bud. Strange.
Just sent out perhaps 9 0z of Brugmansia seed...hope they grow for someone.
