Red Bishop Euplectes orix Common resident in S Africa

Cape Town, South Africa

The red Bishops will soon start to flood their feathers scarlet for the Spring breeding season here in the Cape, South Africa.

The colour starts on their crowns-- a rather messy spolch of orange, but as the spring arrives, their plumage turns to scarlet ,with a black beak area and belly (males) They become quite aggressive on the feeding table. When startled they fluff up their feathers, so that they appear twice their size. As the summer approaches so they return to a dull light brown They nest in reeds and wetlands where they are safe from predators .Their call is a wheezy zic, zic, zic

Marlton, NJ

Neat! I think their quite beautiful when they get breeding feathers! Hope your able to get some shots during that time, we would love to see them.
