Need help please. I have rain lily seeds sprouted in water

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have some rain lily seeds sprouted in water. What do I do now? I am afraid if I put them in soil in this heat they will die.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Not sure but if it were me, I would pot them in potting soil and keep them moist and in the shade until they were established or weather was cooler.

Oops....just remembered that you said rain lily...ignore me. Wouldn't know what to do with them.

I said "if it were me", anything I would be trying to get started at this brutally hot time of year would need shade.

That is why I am afraid to take them out of the water :) I am frying in this heat and the mosquitoes are hideous. If I keep going out moving the sprinkler I am going to need a blood transfusion before the night is over.

I would plant them in pots and keep in the shade, the seeds are going to rot on the water anyway.

Mosquitoes? That's been the ONLY good thing about the drought! VERY few mosquitoes around here. Of course, the ones that are out always manage to find me! LOL But I'm actually able to go out (even during the day) without a shirt/long pants on and usually not get any bites at all. Few day-biters (Asian Tiger Mosquitoes) are out - even at dawn and dusk. In past years I've had to resort to using mosquito netting over my garden hat to keep them off my face/neck, besides wearing long shirt and pants. Not so this year. Even last year was pretty mild mosquito-wise.

I'm not complaining in the least! I'm soooooo tired of flea bites, fire ant bites, spider bites, wasp stings, mosquito bites. But it's the fleas and fire ants this year that really have me bitten up. Husband had to resort to using a chemical on the lawn to kill the majority of the fleas. The Cedar-cide just wasn't chasing them out of the yard - or not for long. (We try VERY hard not to use chemicals because A.} we don't want to contribute to polluting the environment, and B.} I have health issues and I just don't need to be around more chemicals that will screw up my auto-immune system.)

After the rain last week the mosquitoes are horrendous. I live by a deep drainage ditch and really close to the trinity river and old river. I guess that could be it. I covered my self tonight with Skin so soft mosquito spray and did not get a bite in 3 hours till I took my gloves off. Then one bit me on the knuckle. It had to find the one spot not sprayed. Someone told me out of a 100 mosquitoes tested in the Houston area 30 had the west Nile Virus. That is way too many.

I try not to use chemicals also, I love all the little critters in my yard. Lizards, salamanders, and the beige little geckos. I haven't seen any tree frogs in a couple years. I wonder what happened to them. Do I need a pond or water garden to have them around? Then fire ants are really bad here too. I am sorry you have such a hard time with health issues. I remember using chemicals in my yard years ago and after spraying the yard I always felt sick the next day. I can't imagine how you feel.

Have a great evening.

Hi, how are you? Just thot I'd chime in. I would probably plant the seeds in potting mix and bring them in under AC with a flourescent light.
The mosquitos are terrible here too. I think it may be because I have a lot of vegetation and we have open ditches in most of the heights. These take long enough to drain after a rain that mosquitos have time to hatch off a couple generations before they dry up. Run-off from people's lawn sprinkler systems also run down the street into these ditches so even if it has not rained recently, there are still mosquitos. The fire ants have not been as bad as usual here, during the drought but the Extension Service says that as soon as we get substantial rain, the fire ants will be back with a vengeance. They have just burrowed deeper when it's this dry above ground. We've got a ways to go before this heat ends so hang in there! I find myself "hiding" indoors from the heat. I run out and do a little chore and run back in. I only get the minimum done with this method but Im a wimp in this heat.

Yikes! For sure that's way too many! I'll have to be even more vigilant now that I know the odds of my getting bitten by a skeeter with WNV!

I love all the little critters, too. There are a couple of them that I talk to almost every day. LOL I think I've only seen one tree frog around here and that was years ago. As I recall, my daughter used to have a fair number of them when she had a small pond, but she hasn't had it in about 5 or 6 years and I haven't seen any frogs at her place any more. I think they do need to have a water source - not like the little toads who will actually drown in water.

As for my health issues, I deal with them. That's all I CAN do. I'm currently on a prescription drug that makes me sweat profusely - to the point where it's literally running off me. Not all day/night, but usually at certain times, like if I nap. Of course, if I'm out gardening or just walking around outside I have to carry a "sweat rag" or two with me to mop my face/head/neck. But the sweat is easier to deal with than the pain. ;) I just have to take more showers than the average person.

Stay cool - and pray for rain!

Rain lilies grow well in containers, so pot them up and put them in the shade until they're established. Then you can move them to a sunnier place.

Ok will do. I spent 3 and 1/2 hours outside yesterday may will do tomorrow.
