Sassafras tree

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, so I love sassafras trees. When I was growing up we had one next to our fishing cabin. It was huge and I love the leaves (not to eat but to look at). DH and I are on a tree planting mission out at our place. Will a few sassafras trees grow in NE Texas? Are they natives? Also want a few Ginkgo trees (fruitless variety).

Yes they are native, and I am pretty sure they would grow in your area.

I have a male ginkgo I was lucky enough to find at a local nursery. I don't know how easy it is to root a cutting.

I was going to suggest buying the largest ginko you can afford...those trees are slooooow growing! lol My mother gave me one a few years back for my birthday. I've grown wider then it has ;0)

Mibus usually had sassafras trees for trade at the east texas RU. I think they ran rampant on her property. So I know they grow here.

Yes they do grow in the are and they do run rampant I can start looking for some starts and see if I can get them dug up and keep them growing as they are hard to do that with the tap root they have but it can be doneso I can try for the fall to have atleast one for you if you like
I gave some to Jameso a year or so ago

If your Alba is the same as the one near Mineola and you want a lot of sassafras trees, I would suggest Doremus Nursery in Warren, Texas. Warren is a maybe 45 minues past Lufkin, Texas on highway 69 I think. He grows and wholesales a lot of natives. Last fall I bought about 15 from him all sizes up to 8 to 10 feet. He's mainly a wholesaler but he retailed these to me. He doesn't ship. Phyllis gave me three and they had gotten about 3 feet tall. We kept my son's boxer for a week and he ate them down to nothing. It's a very good host plant for the spice bush butterfly.

Thanks for the input guys! I've been away for a few weeks, but am back now.

I'll have to look into Doremus Nursery. Might be a fun road trip. (Yes, I live near the Alba located a bit west of Mineola).

jameso, LOL! Your house sounds like mine. The dogs eat the wierdest things!
