Ecinacea Purpurea in the shade?

Someone here mentioned purple coneflowers as a tall shade garden choice. I have mine only growing in full sun, but have SOOO many seedlings that sprung up this summer that I need to move some. Will they really bloom in the shade? How dense can the shade be? Can they take DRY shade? (I'm excited by this possibility!!) How about rudbeckia goldstrum ??? (Isn't that related to echinacea & could THAT bloom in the shade??)

I have both plants planted in an area which only gets early morning sun and they look better than the others in full sun. I just moved them last fall thinking they wouldn't survive, but they look great. The flower count may be a little smaller, but the foilage looks better.

Lindap, with that many seedlings you have nothing to lose by experimenting. I put one in earlier this summer myself, but it's a very young plant, so the jury is still out as far as flowers go. However, it's green and healthy and has put out new growth at the base.

Don't have the goldsturm variety, but plucked a wild rudbeckia hirta from a roadside and put it in partial shade (full sun just doesn't exist at my place). It also has put out a lot of new growth that is much larger and more vigorous than the original plant. There too, the jury is still out concerning flowers, but the plants are thriving.

I have my purple and white coneflowers in full sun. I'd been thinking of getting rid of them because they look so scorched before the flowers are even fully open and the folige is the pitts. I think I'll try the shade before I give up on them. Our summers are REALLY hot here. I usually give other things more shade than is recommended but was operating under the assumption that coneflowers could take a lot of heat. Well, for Pete's sake, I'd faint too if I had to be out in the midday sun around here.

I have it in morning sun, afternoon shade....stunning!
