Hi there I am looking for information on building an outdoor in-ground bin. I live in Ohio, the earth is all clay and holds water very well which concerns me. Anyone else out there have outdoor bins with similar conditions as me?
Any advice or designs anyone has please let me know. Thanks!
Questions on building first outdoor bin
Clay is not a bad thing as it helps hold water in. Sunken worm bed media like indoor bins should remain moist. Depth is important too. Make sure you dig deep enough to get below the winter frost lines. Mine goes four plus feet into the ground where even in the winter the bottom temperature remains about 45 F. I start with a 4' x 8' x 16" treated lumber raised bed and in the winter I place old glass window panes over the top of the bin as well as adding a layer of alphalfa straw.
