Monster Chickens

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I don't think I ever got around to posting any pics of them. Australian Coronation Sussex Splits
Coronation Sussex x Light Sussex- the splits breeding will produce 25% Coronation, 25% Lights, & 50% Splits. Splits and Lights look the same
My Roo's stand 20 & 22" tall and the hens are 16 to 17" tall

I have 6 hens & 2 Roo's until this week when Rob comes to get them. I can get eggs later back from him if I want more

Sussex vs. Delaware Hen of the same exact age
The Del hen is on the right front next to a Sussex Roo

and lastly when 5 of the Sussex all wanted to lay in the same box with the top on no less. Had to take top off so they would die from heat stroke

I am sure going to miss them. They are all very gentle and sweet

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

Wow seeing those chickens, make me want chickies again!! OOPS..DH would kill me!! LOL

Bridgewater, ME

Look at those rooster legs!Like tree trunks

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful birds - I love their feather patterns. if i had more room for more chickens, these would be on my list...

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

YeeeHa!! That be one BIIIG chicken :)

I have a "Hen" that was given to me when I friend was downsizing, and she was a very cute little brownish thing. Peeped like a baby for the longest time. Then she settled down and began to grow. And grow. Now it seems she is a he. And still growing.

Turns out that his daddy is a Jersey Giant.

Maybe that explains it...

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

O how cute! Bucket O chickens! They are monsters! Wow... Love em!

Richmond, TX

Have you sold all your Sussex? You say you are going to miss them...

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Rob was supposed to come get this this weekend but didn't finish up on a job he is working out of town. I wanted them to go to someone I know and close by so I could get some eggs back later to start over with them if I am able

Richmond, TX

Good plan.

Im thinking that is one of the prettiest hens Ive ever seen, Donna!!
I have a BIG one too. I was told it is a dark Brahma, it stands 23 inches tall and doesnt "Bawwk","Bukbukbuk" or crow. It HONKS like a goose. Im still not sure if its male or female. Now I have a pair of Dark Brahma Bantams and one looks just like it , only in miniature!
So help me out here guys! If this bird follows its leader, who is a white silkie roo, and scratches like a hen and gets down on its big old legs so it will be the same highth as the roo, would you think this is a Hen???

Heres "Wambli" Squatting down in its submissive position!

given the short tail feathers I would say hen

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I'm gonna say rooster, just by coloring. My Dark Brahma hen is uniformly laced all over, and always was. These pictures might help, the one I'm refering to is about half way down the page. I love FeatherSite...

http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGA/Brahma/BRKBrahma.html

The chicken I talked about above still has tail feathers that barely turn down, but I am more and more convinced he's a he :)

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Okay, I lied. The picture is nowhere NEAR halfway down. I had no idea there were so many colors of Brahmas. This was not a good thing for me to find out...'

The page was helpful tho, in helping me identify what color some of my mixes are :)

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Catmad, Yep looks like I have a very very sweet Roo! Shucky -darn! Oh well if I could find some hens as sweet as he is Im good to go! Apparently hes still maturing and G-r-o-w-i-n-g! Hmmmmm... no spurs either!! Yet!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, for it to be squatting, which is such an obvious hen's trait, normally I would say pullet.. in this case, I'm wondering if you got him from San Francisco? LOL

Nope.. I think it's a roo that acts like a hen.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

LMBO!!!! Oh well Mama loves her baby, no matter what! If he continues to be as docile and sweet as he is now I wont mind!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

My 8 Sussex and 2 Del hens just headed out to their new home with a promise of eggs later if I am able to start again. I know I do want more. They are really neat chickens, so sweet for their size, don't eat much and are good layers yr round

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Donna I think your Sussex are absolutely gorgeous! If i didnt already have too to many breeds I would love to have Some and a few Jersey Giants also! Are their eggs really big? I dont think Ive ever seen and egg from one of the larger breeds!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

they were getting up to jumbo size now

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

Donna, where did you get your Australian Coronation Sussex Splits? Did you get this cross by your own breeding? Very beautiful bird!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I got them on a on line auction last September. The chicks are from the Sellers cross of a Australian Coronation Sussex and a Australian Light Sussex. Not US stock birds. These birds were imported from Australia by GreenFire Farms out of Florida in 2009 I believe. You can google their website

(Zone 6b)

They are lovely DonnaB.

Richmond, TX

Those are definitely handsome chickens. I hope to add some to my flock someday. Right now I have more than enough.

Rutledge, TN

What gorgeous chickens. I love having the bigger breeds. Mine are all free range and the larger ones have the best chance of being avoided by predators. But none of mine stand 22 inches tall! WOW!

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

bluebunn, you're lucky. My big guys (no, not that big) don't do as well as the little gamey ones. They're so quick they get away better, it seems. The big ones don't have the same ability to get up and go as fast, I guess.
Of course, my poor Cochins are always behind....

Richmond, TX

I think the hawks look at my Jersey Giants and realize that they are too big to carry away. I've only lost Ameraucanas to hawks.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Ah. Most of my predators (knock on wood) are grounded....

Has anyone heard form Donna recently? I miss her.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I was wondering, myself. I hope she's okay, and that she's just got other things to do :(.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I was thinking about her this morning.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

sorry y'all just not feeling well

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It's understandable. We love you and are praying for you.

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Those are some beautiful chickens.
So many breeds, so little time.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)
