Bird nest for a.....?

Adkins, TX

I have never seen the bird that built this nest. Must be very shy.

Several bird possibilities, depending on the size of the thing (I can't tell from the pic). Also consider a squirrel drey.

Hope this helps with ID.

what tree is it in and how high of the ground. Could be Cardinal. They nest in my Azaleas at about 5' above the ground. Also could be Blue Jay

hmmm just looked at pic again. Is that a Black Locust tree??? I see the spikes. Might be a Loggerhead Shrike nest aka Butcher Bird

Let me add this bit of information, while it's obvious to me it may not be so in the pictures. On the left side of the nest is a tunnel that runs up that side and down into the nest. The entrance is just below the branch it sits on (more visible in the first photo). The nest is about 9 foot off the ground in a desert hack-berry tree.

Our fences are decorated with lots of grasshoppers and lizards. If this is the style of nest for a Butcher Bird then that's probably what it is.

A Wren makes a tunnel nest/cave but usually gets inside of something to do it. They like their nest in a sheltered area like in a flower pot on its side, hanging basket on your porch, very thick shrub etc. Orioles make a hanging nest I believe with has a tunnel entrance

Interesting thread! I never thought about trying to ID a bird by the type of nest it builds, but there is a lot of info out there. Just one more piece of the puzzle!

Maybe a Verdin? They're noted for big messy nests.
