feeding maggots to chickens?

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

Has anyone fed maggots to their chickens? We had a dead rabbit that the maggots were happily eating and our chickens discovered this and had a great meal on the maggots. Gross! But they acted like it were caviar and had a great feast on them. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this before?

Hi again Iowa. Yes if have feed magots to my chickens many times. I use magots for fishing and what is left over always goes to the chickens. Also there are ways to develope magots just for that purpose...Hay

if your feeders sit on the ground you can find lots of fly larva and other bugs under it if you check. It's always a special treat for them

Sounds like a cheap way to feed some high protein feed to the chickens.

Hay, what are the ways that you use to develop maggots for feed? Do you purchase maggots for fishing?

Yes Iowa, I do buy magots for fishing, but I also use left over meat, raw or cooked and other food left overs and I put them in a garbage can with a small amount of liquid and place it in an area where the sun gets to it early. It only takes about ten days and along with food left overs you can have lot, and lots of magots. I then take the garbage can over to the coop area and call the girls and using a garden hose wash all the magots out on the ground and they have a field day with them. I generally do this twice a month. Another thing I do is I place a large fourteen X thirtysix in steping stone down around the coop area. I leave it for six or seven days and then turn it over and there will be lots of worms, beetles and various bugs for the girls. It takes very little time and they get to where they look forward to it...It's free and very nutritional...Hay

Hm, I'll have to try that! Especially since chicken feed has become so expensive. Thanks for the information Hay!
