Mixed Marans

Coushatta, LA

I can get baby marans that are color crossed. Father is a black copper and mothers are wheaten. They are pure french marans just crossed colors. Will they lay liked regular marans?

Yes they will lay just like all the others. The biggest problem with the marans eggs is that they tend to be much harder shelled and sometimes you have to help the chicks out, also due to their dark color they are almost impossible to candle in contrast to other chicken eggs. Good luck and most of all have fun with what your doing...Haystack

Thanks for informing me I'm new to chickens.Had to fight a war with racoons at first but I won and he ended in a pot.He was nice and fat after eating corn, tomatoes, plums and seven chickens.I really had to fortify my chicken yard it's 16' x 36' covered in 72% shade cloth with poultry wire chainlink on it's sides.

Wow!!! Cowpea sounds like you did a great job for being new to chickens. Glad you got that critter. They can really devastate a flock of chickens in not time...It's a pleasure having you here and hope you'll stick around and share some pic's of family, friends, animals, and poultry...Hay

Thanks for the complement! My marans are tiny hactchlings and I have some twelve and eight week old barred rocks(they are what the raccoon ate).I started with twentyfour rocks one died as a tiny hatchling another grew but never grew any feathers and died and the raccoon ate seven.I'm also growing some heirloom dent corn to supplement their diet. An acre should give me about three thousand pounds or more of feed corn. They also get the weeds I pull from my garden. They also like the sweet corn trimmings.I will try to post pictures tomorrow.

The racoons struck again lastnight but they couldn't get into my pen and settled for some corn and tomatoes. Looks like my uncle is going to have another racoon for supper.

What a great mixture of birds you have, and your pen looks well done. For just starting out you have done a great job. Love the corn idea. I detest two legged thieves. Do you have a family? We love pic's...Hay

No family just myself and my birds.
