A friend lost her babies last night. We're not sure what got into the coop but it had to be small since the coup is pretty tight. 10 5 day old chicks all dead and some with their head missing. Anyone have a clue as to what could have gotten into the coup. There was a small opening about 1" on the side of the building. ;( That's going to get fixed!!!
dead baby chicks
Sounds like a weasel. If the coop is tight and only a 1 inch hole that would be my guess
Snakes can get in small openings, but they wouldn't have left anything behind. Green is probably right, if you have weasels in the area, that is probably your night time snacker. Coons can also get into small openings, but not that small.
Any suggestions on how to trap or get rid of a weasel?
You can get those wire live traps. We have a neighbor that uses those to trap coons. Then do away with it however you choose.
I agree with Green's assessment totally. Weasels can flatten themselves and get through the most incredibly small holes. Hard ware cloth is the best defense again the weasel, and it comes in 1/2 or 1/4 in squares. Sorry about the loss, hope you get the culprit...Hay
