What does my butterfly bush need?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

This happened last year when I first planted them. Is this due to too little water or too hot of sun? Or something else? The leaves get yellow and get brown and crunchy. I have an old umbrella to shade them if that will help. Thanks! Janet

They are planted in full sun.

How is your plant doing now? Some of my plants look like this when they have fertilizer burn. This happens to mine when I have to water a lot due to high heat and the soil is rich with fertilizer.

I think the only fertilizer I've used is liquid Hasta Gro and that has been about a month or more ago. They still have those dying leaves but continue to slowly grow new ones and the branches lengthen. The flower heads are very small also but still produce--gone in about a day after blooming. They get watered about 4 days a week for about 7-8 min from the sprinkler system and sometimes I add water when I am hand hosing other things. I would bet the soil is not extremely well drained at about 1 foot down--good ol' clay that we have. Wonder if they have wet feet? :) Thanks for responding, htop. Any advice is welcome! Janet

Janet, perhaps the water from the sprinkler system hitting the leaves is causing the problem and/or too much water as you suggested. Thinking back to a few years ago, when I watered mine too much this happened.

Thanks! We'll try watering less frequently and I'll spot water other things as needed. I love experimenting, as long as I don't kill things!

I hope this solves the problem!!
