An egg in an egg in an egg and a wee egg

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I thought I'd share some pics of two eggs we picked up today. No clue who laid them. One is very tiny and we don't have any new layers here. The other is odd. It is an egg inside an egg inside another egg. There are three layers to it. I haven't opened it up yet to see if there are any more eggs inside this one. Not sure what causes this. I'd be happy to learn. Anyone else get odd looking eggs sometime?

Oh wow! That is unusual. The shells are even different colors as if they were produced by different hens! I've no idea what is going on.

The egg inside the partial egg shell could be because they broke an egg and the remaining shell got stuck onto the whole egg. Okay not easy to explain and sounds weird, but we have had that happen before We had a hen sitting on eggs that were hatching, and an 1/2 an egg that was in the nest from a hatched chick actually got stuck over an egg of a chick that wasn't yet hatched. Good thing we checked the eggs beccause the poor chick would have had to peck through two eggs.
We get little eggs every now and then, its just a bleep egg we call it. We even got a little egg from one of our ducks the other day, not super little but more bantam size. But we have gotten the tiny tiny ones from the chickens several times..

We haven't had anyone hatching eggs here but if an egg had broke and someone else laid an egg inside the shell wouldn't there be broken egg around it? I have no explanation either. Just kind of strange.

It happens.. not a dangerous thing.. just a "bleep" in the system.. No worries. Stranger things have happened! LOL There is, no doubt, a long scientific explaination, but that takes a little more brain power than I'm willing to expend this morning.. :)

There would be broken egg if they didn't eat it, but hens tend to eat the egg and shell so that may be what happened. Maybe the eater got disturbed by the hen that layed the next egg so it didn't finish and then the hen layed the egg and it got into the half shell?

When I cracked it this morning and took a closer look the eggs were attached so it was just one egg layed. Not sure how that happened but I guess it was a mistake.

Sounds kinda LOONEY to me...LOL...Hay

Did some reading... Apparently, when the egg is developed, sometimes there is a freak contraction pushing the developing egg back up, and it is overlapped by the next developing egg. Since they are both soft, the egg that would be layed first is just absorbed by the next egg as it is pushed out.. It is not dangerous, it is somewhat rare.

Google double egg and it's so fun to see people who got more than just a double egg! Lots of strange eggs out there! :)

Thanks for looking that up for me. Very interesting and it makes sense doesn't it? I wish I knew which of my hens laid this rare egg. :)

Doesn't it make you wonder how they can produce a perfect egg everyday and these kind of eggs are rare?

When I collect my eggs, I always think, "what a little miracle!"

I had a RIR that laid double yolkers very often.. it was such a treat! Why? I don't know! LOL

Sometimes, when I get an egg that is so perfect, I too, am in amazement.. Chickens are just too cool. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I still get such a kick out of the eggs, and how they feel and what a wonderful gift from Mother Nature. The Incredible, Edible, Egg, is right!
