Datura writii

Arlington, TX

My husband's friend was suprised I was growing this plant near tomatoes. He informed me they poison the soil. I know they are harmful if eaten and contain some nasty alkaloid compounds that people try to use to get high but I haven't read about them affecting nearby soil? Any ideas on this?

No they don't, the tomatoes and the datura are of the same family, tomato and potato plants are poisonous too as well as many other plants, Solanaceae (Potato Family) a large family.

Josephine is right. This is why the 'tomato' hornworm is right at home munching on the Datura as well :)

Well thats what I figured but didn't want to say anything. His point was related to soil. I had never heard of that with any plant in the nightshade family, only walnut trees.
