Last fall, I planted about 300 spring-blooming bulbs. All of them sprouted and bloomed wonderfully! However, there were two areas I wished I done differently. Having never done dutch iris before, I mistakenly planted them in front where they ended up drooping over the sidewalk. I also planted my daffodils in a full circle around a small tree. The tree didn't make it so the flowers looked sparse. I'd like to group them in a tighter semi-circle, making it easier if we every replant something in the middle of the bed. Our spring has already come and gone. The dutch iris have already yellowed and died back. The daffodils are quickly headed that way. I'm wondering if it'd be okay to go ahead and dig up and move these bulbs now (after the daffs finish dying back, of course)? Or if it'd hurt or hinder them in any way?
Also, I have an entire bed of Asiatic lilies that were planted in too much shade. They grew, but did not bloom the first year. So I had hoped to move them in early spring, but they had already started growing before I had the chance. They all grew super-tall and currently have gorgeous blooms! Now I'm wondering... after they yellow and die back (mid-summer, I'm guessing)... can I move these, too? Or should I dig them up in the fall and wait to replant them next spring?
I guess in both instances, I'm worried about them trying to grow when they shouldn't. Any advise would be great! Thanks!!!
Moving Spring Bulbs in Summer?
All of the bulbs mentioned are best moved in the Fall. That is the ideal, as it it doesn't disrupt any process. However, they can be moved anytime if you really need to. Take a big shovelful of soil along with the bulbs (to not disturb the roots) and they won't miss a beat.
