Something's Growing! What is It?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I stuck this mealy blue sage baby in this pot. Now something's coming up beside it and I have a sneaky suspicion it might be a thought dead ginger. Any ideas??

I think your ginger is trying to be nice to you.

I have a habit of recycling potting soil and just stirring it all in with a new bag. In three different pots this spring I had ginger and/or elephant ears of different ilk poke their heads up. Bet that is a ginger.

Okay, does it like sun or shade or partial shade/sun? It looks a little toasted to me.

Could it be a hosta?

Highly unlikely, catz, though that's what I first thought. I had a ginger in this pot last fall and assumed it died. I'm really thinking that's what it is.

It looks like a hosta to me too, but I think if it were, you would've seen a root clump. I'll bet it's a ginger.

I guess we'll wait & see what it turns out to be. My first thought was Hosta, but I don't have any of those anywhere here nor do I know anyone who does.

Definitely Shade, but they can do part shade as well, just make sure no afternoon sun.

If it is a ginger it will take morning sun only, as Brandon said. Maybe that is the spiral ginger from Kenboy? It isn't as stout a root as a butterfly ginger. I thought mine was dead for a while earlier this year too.

None of my gingers came back, so anything's possible. I will move it to the front where it can get dappled shade.

My gingers are just now breaking ground. Even some I planted just this year. Most of the tropicals have been slower than usual this Spring. Guess they require the hot nights of 75 or more.

My gingers are all up four foot or more, but they are in morning sun only.

I have galangal, which is similar to ginger, and the leaves smell when I water them or move them around. Pinch your leaf and see if it smells like ginger!? Janet
