Who else is here from Zone 7a and 7b?

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

I'd like to share notes with anyone else gardening in zone 7a and 7b.

I live within the city limits of Charlotte. We had a wonderful spring weather wise, but now the rain seems to have vanished. So far we've had 12 days of above 90F temperatures since Jan 1st.

How are ya'll's gardens doing?

Sowed Beets indoors on Jan 11th and separated the seedlings when they had their second set of true leaves. They produced a wonderful crop.

Sowed Broccoli seeds indoors on Feb 1st and have been cutting them since Apr 24th - they won't give up despite the hot weather.

Sowed Wando peas around Feb 17th. Don't know what happened. Only 20 sprouted. So I transplanted them into a single row, and purchased Alaska peas from WMart. They performed much better than the Wando - infact they are still producing. I also grew Burpeena Early. Despite being attacked by aphids, they produced a good crop.

I picked the first asparagus on Feb 25 - a month earlier than usual.

Onions were set out March 5th and should be ready by the end of this month. The wind we had earlier this spring blew them over, and they stayed that way!

Tomatoes were sown indoors on March 18/19/20 and set out April 15/16. They are now almost as tall as I am. Yesterday I had to prune back some of them so I would not end up with the tomato jungle I had last year. So far, only one tomato has had blossom end rot.

I sowed melons indoors on March 22nd, set them out on April 25th and, thanks to the bees, I can see lots of baby melons forming.

Soybeans have been sown here and there throughout the garden, plus some in double rows.

Sweet Peppers have also been transplanted througout the garden. I decided to grow lots of them this year because the caterpillars usually get to eat more than I do!

I set 50 sweet potato slips on May 22nd, and the weather promptly turned cold and all but 17 died. Fortunately, I had some sweets left from last year that had some sprouts, so I set them out. I didn't know how/if I should break-off the slips, so I planted them with the potato. So far, they seem to be doing okay.
