How do I????

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I bought a Brugmansia a couple of month ago & must admit I know nothing about them.. It didn't bloom this year didn't even branch out at all... is that normal..where I got it they had some very large ones..
When I cut it back how far back do I cut it & how do I grow new ones from the cuttings. I have it in a container that is about 5 gallons..I do have some sweet potato vines around it.. maybe that helt it back.
I can use all the help U can give me..
Thanks,

I don't know much about them but tiG sent me 7 cuttings and 5 of them are making it. They were about6-8 inches long and I just put them in moist soil. Of course, you want to have some leaf (growth) buds down in the soil...

Sugar how big is it? Cause you might not have to cut it back until spring.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Bonifay, if i were you i would plant it in a very sunny spot with a lot of peat/humus stuff in the holee, and water it every day. You still have time for blooms!!! I am kinda your neighbor, in same zone. i have plants still making their first buds. If you are going to take cuttings anyway please do ths as i really want you to have blooms this year.

Wait until closer to frost to cut. last year was my first year and i didn't cut them all the way back, just some cuttings, but Glory who is much more experienced than me says she cuts hers back to the ground and mulches, i think.

please post back what you do.

Since I live in zone 8b and we do get freezes here I cut my brugs down to the ground and cover them with mulch.

This site will answer most of your Brug questions. If you still have question please post them on Daves and someone will try and answer them for you.

You could also over winter in the pot, may bloom this winter for you.

Arlene...I forgot about leaving it in the pot...I'm brain dead..:)

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Gloria, so am I! I guess because Sugar wanted to cut them. I have a few more in pots i am going to put in the ground, but not really small ones.

Glory & Arleen,
I only asked about cutting it back because that is what the lady I bought it from said I would have to do..in zone 8 can I leave it outside for the winter if I mulch it?

tiG it is about 3 ft tall but hasn't grown hardly at all since I got it a couple of months ago..

sugar, I've brought some in that are taller than that and will keep them without cutting through the winter. But you can cut, not to say you can't.

tiG I'll take a pix tomorrow if it isn't raining.. it just doesn't look like the ones I see on here..I don't know what they cost but I paid $5 from a lady who sells plants down the road from us.

You guys!!!Shoot ,I thought the first thing you would tell her is to fertilize the heck out of it!!!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

CC you are right!

1. Either a bigger pot with good soil, lots of fertilizer and water, take inside on freezing nights or
2. Plant in ground with lots of peat/humus added to it, fertilize well, and take cuttings before first frost.

Sugar, there is nothing magic about cutting it back, if you don't you will just have to look at dead stalks until you do cut them back, but odds are excellent it will come back from winter, and if you take cuttings to root you will have more babies ready for spring in case it doesn't.

Arlene...thanks.I was getting ready to tell her the same thing. There is nothing worse then mushy Brug canes. LOL

Ahh, zone well chances are, as I am 45 minutes or so from Georgira....Brugmansia grow just fine here in Northern Florida in the Ground. In fact, I just harvested a few lbs worth of seeds from my ground grown Brugmansia. The result of my hybridizing attempts this year...been a bit slow this year of course. 2 hours south, I have had larger Brugmansia survive being below 28 degrees, but with much damage to leaves and new growth. So, much depends on the size of the trunk.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

At what point would you plant one in the ground in Zone 7, Texas, Brugman?

"eyes"

Brugman is right about the cane size....just a chance you will have to take if you don't want to cut them back. Brugs grow so fast once the weather warms ups here in the South. I am in zone 8b and I planted a Jessie Noel that was only in a gallon pot.....that was in mid March and today it is up to the top of the roof of my gazebo. I just cut down another one that was planted this year and it was 10 feet tall.

I ran across this post looking for something. I didn't cut it back last winter & at the 1st sign of cold weather it "died" I thought I had lost it but come warm weather it was back & better than ever. I think most of U have seen the pix I have put on the last few days of it. I have nowhere in a mobile home to put it & if the growth is gonna die anyway I might as well cut it & hopefully trade for some different ones. I feel like it will get bigger when I put it in a larger pot.
Thanks for all the help & I'm sure I'll be asking for more ;) http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4030970&a=30238294&f=0
