Royal Empress Paulownia Tree

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Does anyone here in Texas know something about this tree? There is only one comment on the DG plant files for it. It is a very fast grower and that worries me. My neighbor asked me if I knew anything and I had never heard of it. Any info would be appreciated. Cam

It is non native and very invasive. Here is the info;

Thanks, Josephine. I suspected as much. I have now favorited the Invasives link so I can check for myself in the future.

Since I don't have one of those pretties, what do you think about a Parasol tree?
I have 3 or 4 of them! Huge leaves, tall as my roof, & just waiting for mine to get to their huge heights to bloom!?!

do you have a pic of the Parasol tree? never heard of it :)

I think the Empress tree is native to China or thereabouts, and have heard that it is a vigorous grower and has viable seed that sprouts up everywhere, and can be carried of course by wind, or waterways, birds ect. I would be afraid of it. Seems also that many trees that grow 'miraculously' fast, are not long lived trees and die rather soon, or have soft woods that don't take storms well or need constant staking and such. I have also read that Empress trees are messy to clean up after.

By the 4 negative comments in plantfiles...I would say the Parasol tree is an invasive stay away from plant also.

Sheila, I have had 4 in my yard for about 7 yrs!!! I love mine! Three are almost as tall as my house. Have never seen any flowers yet so every yr, I sweat them making it thru the winter. Did you notice that all the negatives were fr the deep south? If you have a real winter w/some freezing temps, I would not say it is invasive. But you know how tropical climates can grow plants, like Texas size!!! lol
But now if you want to talk native, try an American fringe tree! Absolutely beautiful in the Spring!!! All of mine bloomed while I was up there. :~(
But I got seeds to prove they did, just don't know when to pick them!
:~)
