I have not been able to identify this bird in my searches on the web. It is robin sized, and was pretty aggressive in defending the feeder when my usual house sparrow guests were wanting to eat.
Any takers?
CLOSED: yellow breasted bird with white ring around the neck.
Amaree,
I'm not sure if they're in your area, but go to Google Images & look up Immature Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. They have tons of pictures that might help. We have lots of Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks at this time of year & they're generally very non-agressive, gentle birds, but it's the closest bird I could find to your picture.
Do you have any more pictures?
Hi Amaree , It looks to me like a female Black-headed Grosbeak.
Check out the pic at the bottom of the page here and see what you think. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-headed_Grosbeak/id
Ditto to female Black-headed Grosbeak - MT is a bit too far west for Rose-breasted (other than a scarce passage visitor), and that also has a pinker bill than yours.

I did actually see a male rose breasted grosbeak last week. I assume it was just passing through.the picture of the female black-headed grosbeak was pretty close, and it was the same size as the rose-breasted grosbeak. Thanks! I have a very difficult time identifying females, so I appreciate.the help :-) I think that must be what it was.
